Alternator pulley
I have an ‘07 XC90 and I am in the process of replacing my alternator. I bought a new Bosch alternator as a replacement, but it does not come with a pulley. Should I be replacing the pulley too can I use the old one? If the latter, how do I remove the pulley? Thanks for any help. Matt

Hi Matt,
What engine do you have?
Looking through the manual (VIDA), it looks like in general, the pulley un-bolts, but with some variation how it un-bolts, and the corresponding tools required. Volvo has a collection of special tools available, and some have just torx or twelve-point internal sockets. Some have a freewheel clutch, others just the more traditional pulley.

Thanks for the response. I found a pulley remover tool from AutoZone that I rented for about three minutes. The Pulley came off very easily with the tool, thankfully!

Replacing the drive cog on the 3.2 6 cylinder alternators is a good idea as those can lock (one way clutch for cyclic rpm variation handling seizes) and then the driving cog is worked loose on its shaft and it quits charging.
The V8 engine uses a solid drive pulley and those are very long lasting but in use for 200K miles it might have v groove wear that makes it less tractive to belt and it would be a good idea to replace it for that reason

I replaced the alternator and got everything back together. At first, the car would start and die instantly, after many times of starting. Then, it started and idled very unevenly, and eventually evenly. I drove it around for about 10 min or and the shifting is weird. Assuming it has to relearn things for a bit.
However, I parked and turned the car off. Then, I started it again, and took a bit of cranking to actually turn over, then it died again. Now, I have it started and idling in the driveway again, and idling okay. So, what’s going on here? Is this normal for relearning?
Maybe the battery needs replacing, but wil have to check on that later. UPDATE: Battery checks out okay.

My best guess based on the curent symptoms is a failing MAP sensor. Either coincidental or maybe I damaged it somehow during the alternator repair. Will replace that and see what happens.
