06 XC70 Blower Motor replacement question

I went to this thread to look at the how-to, and the pictures are not there for clarity.

I have got to the point of removing the glove box, and cannot figure out how you access the 2 'tabs' Vida tells you to move to remove the glove box. Also Vida talks about a piston that has to be dis-connected on the RHS of the glove box, but our car does not have this. Instead it has a weird string on a rewind coil. It is easy to remove, as it just slides up and out of a slot on the glove box door, But I cannot see any way to access the 2 release tabs. I could use a long screw driver, but don't want to damage the tabs as they look fairly fragile. Any suggestions?

Does the glove box actually detach from the the outer frame as it feels like it is fairly well attached by hinges?

Just slide your hand and gently bend each tab at a time and pass it in front with your fingers. Better not force the gb because the tabs cab break. Look with a flash light, its actually simple. For the rear torx screws on the blower, I used a small torx bit at the and of an adjustable pliers. Pulling the carpet from there is also needed.

Once the tabs are free, the box will come forward and u have access to the lower torx screws. The box comes out toghether with the frame.

That makes it much clearer oragex! Many thanks. Hardest part is when you are my size, big hands with arthritis are not much help in these narrow/small places. Dumb-ass design which is guaranteed to break with age.

I thought the glove box door might just hinge down to allow access to the Torx screws holding the frame in place. I will try to take pictures that can perhaps be added to the original text to help others.

Appreciate the help. Working on P2's is something I have left to the dealers up until now for the most part.

Job done! Typical Volvo mentality and let's make at least one bolt/screw that needs extra tools or fancy tools to access it, and also make it almost impossible to see.

Hardest part was tackling the dropping of the glove box. Even I, with large hands was able to fit my hands into the space where the 2 tabs that limit its ability to drop to the floor. Lifting the glove box slightly made it easy to deflect/bend the tabs sufficiently to release the glove box to drop downward to allow access to the 8 T25 Torx screws holding the whole unit in place.

Having done this job now, it is not too bad, especially once you see how it all goes together. There is one screw that is hard to access on the RH rear corner of the fan assembly. To get to that, I used a 1/4" universal joint and 1/4" T25 socket on a long handled multi-driver screw driver. To prevent the universal joint flopping around, I use electrical tape wound around the joint to reduce the flex significantly. That gave a limited flex sufficient to access that screw.

I found the Vida instructions were poor for this vehicle. They talk about levering out the fan motor from the plastic housing. What it missed was there is a plastic housing on the back of the unit that has to be removed and there are 2 x T25 Torx screws hidden below it. These have to be removed to allow you to gently lever the motor out of the plastic housing. There are also a couple of other detail differences. There are supposed to be 2 drain hoses. I only found one, and that was attached to the plastic housing for the motor and runs down to the RH 'A' pillar base. There was provision for on what I assume is the cabin filter, but there was nothing fitted there.

When time allows, I will look at the S60 repair write up someone did, but the photos are no longer attached. I will include the changes and differences between the 2 processes.

Most of the time, access to bolts is easy on this car, but there are some known exceptions - this being one of them.

For the future people doing this job, don't skip on replacing the rear torx screws that keep the fan assembly: these are all important to be properly secured so as to prevent water leaking.
