Fall 2017...the tale of the Noisy Pig

Hopefully funny story on my 1999T5M

I finally got around to chasing my bad growling CVVT exhaust, replaced the hub, retimed it with help of Wizechatmgr, and all well, right?

Well, still noisy...now I hear alternator rattle and growl through my pipe. Alternator rebuilt 25k ago, do I ordered a new one from FCP, installed it. Nasty game of alternator Tetris for 45 minutes getting it out, not too bad going back in.

All set? Still noisy...now it's the PS pump. I have a spare from my parts car, so in it goes. Easy job up top.

All. Set?

Well..now the AC compressor bearing is noisy...even with the clutch disengaged.

Good news? I've run out of engine accessories.

Sheesh... It seems like you've found yourself a white whale, or a KER-FLUNK! :)

Do the 99s have the same accessory belt tensioner as the 98s?

No - the 'bastards' went to a new routing..I think. AC compressor changed, tensioner went to a 14mm bolt.

I just spent time searching for the 'short serpentine belt' thread to see if I can run my car without AC until I do the compressor - maybe in the spring, but couldn't find it.

It is but there is both a chassis break and the tensioning problem to understand.

What about putting one of those dummy wheels in place of the compressor? I know for Ford at least compressor replacement wheels are made to delete the compressor. Maybe the parts store may have them for whatever compressor Volvo uses. Have you checked? June

If it's the outer bearing on the compressor (by the clutch) I believe this one can be serviced without having to evac the system. That said, I can totally understand wanting to just run a short belt in the interim.

Also, I have a nearly new condition Dorman PS pump sitting in a box if you want to roll the dice... That was the one I picked up on Amazon as a return for ~$20
