I ended up pulling the plug out yesterday and had a heck of a time trying to suck the oil gear oil out. I was unable to get any tubing of sufficient size into it to be able to remove the oil and instead ended up pumping about half a quart into it and displacing some of the existing gear oil - it was the best I could do at that moment.
The question:
Is there a specific alignment that needs to be made in order to not have interference from a gear, etc within the angle gear assembly?
The rear diff. will be getting done soon, am I likely to run into the same issue?
Angle gear oil change (also off topic info on the 1999 damper) Topic is solved

And while we are on this topic, what is this metal box under the edge of the oil pan and trans?
The part number I find is 666: box cleverly designed to make a mess while changing engine oil
But I'm wondering if anyone knows it's function

I have used 1/4 inch hard plastic line, the line often used for refrigerator ice maker water line, and was able to get to bottom.
The box is a vibration damper. A ox with a weight in it, maybe a rubber sleeved weight. Remove the two nuts and take it off for oil changes or even leave it off to see if you notice any difference. 2000 models did not have it and there is no other changes visible anywhere in the driveline on those.

Like jimmy57 says, I did the same thing using a small hand pump/syringe with a narrow clear pipe. Not sure of the diameter but 1/4" OD sounds about right. I had to fiddle it around in the opening of the angle gear and the rear diff to get the oil out, but I did find a spot in each that allowed most to be extracted.
