2000 V70R with 145K miles and runs PERFECTLY with the original white label ETM.
A lot of oil changes using synthetic will do this
I also have the original breather system with -2.5 pressure (that's half of when new but a LONG way to go before it becomes clogged)
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

At the moment it starts and runs great. Found a completely split vacuum hose from intake manifold to the check valve that ties into the turbo inlet hose. So, at start and idle it was sucking in a ton of unmetered, cold air.

Replaced this and it idles perfectly.

Pulled out DiCE and checked. No ETM codes right now, but will continue to monitor.

That’s all second hand knowledge , unconfirmed
Preface, this is just an educated guess...
I'm thinking the software must regulate current to the linear motor based on torque request while monitoring the RPM, MAF and/or lambda signals to achieve the desired air flow and fuel mix effectively ignoring the TPS through the wear area. It could work from a map/table once it's had some time 'learn' as there will be variances from one unit to the next. Anything else would potentially throw off AFR and probably make more problems than it would solve. Knowing how it works aides in diagnosis when and if something goes wrong with a CEL/drivability symptoms.
If this is how they did it this would somewhat complicate differentiating between a malfunction of the ETM and various other sensors and intake leaks.

Edit: I'll go so far as to suggest this software 'fix' has also been applied to newer MYs with the Bosch type throttle bodies: My '06 S60 when I bought it was spitting DTCs for the MAF and LAMBDA/fuel trims while ignoring the throttle plate getting stuck at several positions through the part throttle range. The TPS was good, the problem was mechanical inside the TB. The ECU seemed to be disregarding the throttle plate behavior as a position sensor issue instead properly recognizing that there was mechanical issue with the TB and triggering the appropriate DTCs. Had it not been ignoring the TPS I would have zeroed in on the throttle body right away instead of messing with practically everything else for the better part of a month. My haunch is that the PO dumped the car over this- federal emission test zones force the issue - if you or your mechanic can't figure it out and get it to pass the plates and/or your DL will be suspended. In IL you get a about a year to either fix it or dump it.

01_Nautic_V70. the yellow labels were all built with sensor 1 & 2 full contact carbon strips. Only a XeModex conversion or one of Volvo's recent 36050563 or 36050564 built post 2014 will get you a possible contactless conversion.........Or a DIY contactless using a Sacer sensor.

I've seen what mbrian200 describes above on many ETMs I tested using the upgraded firmware in my now recycled 2000 V70 NA. Some of the ETMs would suggest (by scanning with Vida) an O2 sensor or MAF fault on my vehicle but drove perfectly and vehicle returned good tank mileage.

The new software makes diagnosing a vehicle very tricky.

I got 140k miles on my first white label ETM. I started getting an occasional ETS light at 130k, then constant at 140k then one month later I hit limp mode

That's about the average for any ETM yellow or white. Did it have updated firmware at the time of failure?

It did , yes. I want to say the firmware was updated in 2004, probably about 60k miles

The firmware that prevents limp home was implemented in 2006. Does the Carfax show any more software updates?

We have also posted here that yellow and white labels are identical units, white is original , yellow is replacement.

Is that stuff we made up or has someone knowledgable confirmed this?

It could have been that late, I'll check. I definitely hit limp home in 2012 when it crapped out
