Thanks for the oil cap gasket suggestion, everyone!
On my '98 V70 at 156k miles, i remember the oil dipstick was smoking. When my brother and I replaced the PCV, the hoses were in fact clogged. I'm now hoping the '00 V70 doesn't need the work yet. I've still got a coolant system refresh and a timing belt replacement in mind.
Update on the brake noise: Even though I had torqued the bolts on all four wheels to 100 ft/lbs, the right front had become loose during my test drive. One bolt was even hand-loose! The lack of a retaining pin/screw in the rotor made it a PITA to align and get the new rotor flush with the hub — and it gave me a false torque reading. Scary, but it seems ok now, and I'm glad it was a short test drive.
What did you do to your Volvo today? Topic is solved

The wheel guide pin should hold the rotor against the hub. Is yours missing?
I usually use one wheel bolt to hold the rotor in place, opposite the guide pin, when I reinstall everything.

Today, I opened the hood, stared at the misfiring engine for a few minutes, thought about swapping things around to see if the problem stayed in cyl 5 or travelled, and closed it again. Major case of the fuggits.

Yes, it was seized and snapped when I tried to remove it. I did end up using a couple of wheel bolts to hold the rotor on but it shifted when I took it off to get the wheel back on. I'll have to find a screw extractor small enough to get it out. Fun!bmdubya1198 wrote: ↑26 Nov 2017, 07:58 The wheel guide pin should hold the rotor against the hub. Is yours missing?

Been there!
That was me with the turbo replacement on my old 2001 Saab 9-5. It only took me 2 years to start it back up again! (Then less than a week to burst the lower radiator hose.)

You can just leave it in and use a stainless steel m6 cap screw there. Lube threads and just hand tight after you bang rotor firmly against the hub.brunocerous wrote: ↑26 Nov 2017, 11:37Yes, it was seized and snapped when I tried to remove it. Went to the car wash and cleaned the front wheels last evening. They had enough brake dust to almost match the black paint on the car... Rear wheels (as always) had no real dust. Good times!
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

The nice thing about my ceramic brake pads is that there is virtually no dust, front or rear. And they're cheap-o Rock Auto Centric pads, too!
Hopefully when I upgrade to Akebono or EBC the dust will stay like it is.

That's all aftermarket, for sure. None of that is original.
