It's been awhile for me posting here. We replaced my wife's '02 S60 2.4T with a BMW 328i and I couldn't bring myself to let the S60 go, so I kept it as a second car for myself. Last year it got rear ended in traffic and the insurance totaled it and I let it go. Ever since I've been missing the S60, so I got an itch to replace it. Found this R the other day and am going to check it out tomorrow. Anything particular I should look at for a 2007 R.

I have a 2005 XC90 2.5T AWD with 110K.
Bought it at 80K miles.
So far so good.
Issues:
1. Angle gear sleeve stripped, so my car is now a FWD, not AWD car. No big deal. I have winter tires.
So if your angle gear sleeve is ever stripped, I'd leave it alone and drive it as FWD.
The sleeve is a bad design, replacing with new sleeve may end up with the same problem again.
That car is in california, so the sleeve is probably still good.
2. Go to XC90 forum, I wrote a few DIYs there (Timing Belt DIY posted yesterday and whole bunch of other stuff such as heater core not hot enough, cleaning the Throttle Body etc.).
Overall, the 2.5T platform is a great one, with proper maintenance, it will easily go to 200K miles.

A good inspection by a "Volvo competent mechanic" or even a (gasp) dealership?
If I had that car on a lift I wouldn't know how to test the angle gear sleeve. Also, does the '07 have to angle gear with fluid, filter and accumulator? If so, se if that works.
Check the oil filler cap for "solids". Here's where a fiber optic scope will help you look under the valve cover.
Remove the boost air hosing and check or oil. Also, don't the intercoolers bulge sometimes as they age?
See if the handbrake shoes are there. See how the control arm bushings look.
At least with an R you don't have to think about those silly saddle-bag gas tanks and the extra fuel pump.

I don't see the title, is it clear? There was a owner with a flooded R few years ago, worth make sure it doesn't have such issues

As above, you may be good to replace the shock absorbers front and rear (over $1000 with Monroes, double this at the main dealer), the control arms ($500), a PCV ($500), timing belt ($5-$700, use the kit from Volvo to be safe, no need to replace the water pump). Prices will vary of course
The R costs quite more than the regular 2.5T to maintain.
Carefully check how the transmission is shifting when hot

Thanks for all the suggestions. I checked out the car today and it looked tired. Given the cost of ownership of an R and the repairs this car needs to be great again it just isn't worth it. I'm looking for a fast fun road trip car and something comfortable in LA traffic, so the R is really overkill. Tonight I looked at a T5 with 102K miles. Two owner, both ladies, the cars been gently owned and cared for. The left headlight is cracked and the right is very yellowed. Still needs the typical 100K work: suspension, fluid, mounts. Otherwise in amazing condition.

Listen to oragex he knows his stuff on this issue.
The T5 suspension is half the cost to replace/maintain, and no AWD to break ...
