Does anyone repair ECC modules?

Post by IG-88A »

I've amassed a small collection of broken ECC modules over the last few years, due to their fragile and finicky nature. And it's only a matter of time until the used replacements that I'm currently using suffer the same fate. Is there a member on here, or someone elsewhere that knows how to diagnose and repair these things? Has it ever been determined if the board itself goes bad, or if it's a replaceable component that could easily be soldered into place? If possible, I'd like to have some fresh ones waiting in the wings for next time. There will be a next time.

Should also add that so far I have not had to replace one in a P80. I did once think one was faulty but it was a bad servo motor.

Maybe it is a warm/humid area issue than for us up here in the colder north? Also you probably use them more than we do!

That's weird, I've also never had to replace an ECC, except for cosmetic reasons. I know, not yet. Are you sure your car isn't cooking them somehow; are they going bad in both cars?

Swapping out different ecu(s) like motronic 4.3 to a 4.4 without modification leads to killing of ecc modules, that's one main reason, other reasons are laying down in car's electrics and electric shorts.
Never heard that any ecc module failed on it's own and never heard that anybody needed to replace it except for Mot.4.4 conversion in a 4.3 car.

You can pick them up from PnP for next to nothing, so repairing them doesn't make sense.

Unless you have a track record and a car to test and warranty them, there isn't much business meat there.o

Comparing with Mattys ABS business, when you read the hacks of people sawing open the cases, bad soldering, and then wondering why the units crap after 3 weeks when they do it themselves, it's easy to understand why buying from him is the smart money.

No ECU swap in either of my cars. And I'm not aware of them frying for any reason. I couldn't think of a reason for them frying. I've not really had any weird electrical gremlins in either car. Knock on wood. I had one go bad in the 94 turbo. Thought it was initially the blower resistor. Bought a new one of those. Same symptoms. Swapped in the ECC from the 95 NA and it also didn't work. I hadn't driven it in a while, so I wasn't sure what was up with it. But I had replaced it once before. Bought one from a local junkyard for each car and they worked perfectly. Maybe I just have bad luck. So, just for the sake of knowing, what would cause ECC failure aside from swapping ECUs?

Charging system working properly?
Fuses for cabin fan(for all speeds) & for ecc have correct amp rating?

Dry bearings on cabin fan can cause the fan to pull too much amp,but in that case it would blew up the fuse unless it's replaced with higher rating one. Before it blows the fuse it would throw ecc codes(ac & rec light would blink letting you know that something is wrong).

The 850 versions have a real nasty habit of flaming out. From the looks if things in the aftermath it is due to shorted electrolytic caps and I'm not so sure that there wasn't one that was factory installed backwards. The bad thing is that when the capacitor blows up it tends to take out a big chunk of the circuit board along with it.

A couple of fine folks here have mailed me some "cores" to play with to see if I can come up with a repair but I have never had the spare time to work on it. If things slow down a bit I will put it on the project list for this winter and see if I can come up with a fix. The rub is that there are no publicly available schematics.
