Spring Strut Measurement & Torque Chart

Post by Oka »

MEASURING SPRING STRUT POSITION

The VIDA software instructs this and why so? It asks to measure the spring strut position in relation to the wheel spindle before removal. Have replaces struts in other autos and they were straight forward.

The two bolts are tight and 'solid' in there that there is no slack to warrant any "measurement" during installation of the new strut.

According to OEM instruction:
Note! The measurements are taken so that the same camber angle can be obtained when installing.
- Measure across the wheel spindle/spring strut at the upper screw as illustrated.
- Before measuring, clean off any dirt from the measuring surfaces.
- Note the measurement.

TORQUE INFORMATION

Interesting how VIDA software has the torque specs on a different page. One has to know exactly the name of the item being torqued to get it right. Most times, item names are not the general terms for OEM terms.

Am in the process of removing both front struts and lower arm bushings. I can't make out which torque is which. The torque chart is kinda confusing to me in the VIDA software.

Thanks.

This is for the S60 but it should be similar for the XC70

As for the 'measurement', it's about the camber setting. Once loosened, the upper of the two bottom strut bolts has a play in the strut. When loosening the bolt/nut see how the spindle will move either towards you, either towards the engine. I prefer pushing the spindle all the way towards the engine, before tightening back.

You will probably have trouble disconnecting the upper sway bar link to the strut. A quality torx socket is a must here, perhaps soaking it with penetrating oil days in advance will also help.

I'd suggest going with Lemforder for the lower arm. Some even say the recent Ipd HD arm is also quite durable, time will tell. Steer clear of any other brands, including Meyle, Sweden Parts, etc these won't last more than 2 years

I'd use new bolts for the control arm, Volvo has them for a few dollars each, these tend to rust in contact with the subframe.

I already got a set for the Cross Country which is longer and should have higher torque spec. I originally got a set of the V70 but realized I made a mistake and reordered one for the XC70 (V70XC). These ones are larger in size. I got Sachs brand, not much choice for me.
