1998 V70 Remote Start AFTERMARKET

Post by CEBirnley »

I am interested in installing an aftermarket remote start. Please advise on solid system options. I am not looking for anything fancy, mainly just to start the car. Please advise.

I have used Viper systems on 2 P80's. One was the more basic 2 way with remote start and the other is an immobiliser with remote start. They were expensive once you add in the inevitable add-ons for automatic trans and install. Cheaper one was about $400 CDN the more expensive nearer $700. Both have re-chargeable remotes. Our labour rates are often higher here too. Try places like Best Buy for options/deals. Not sure who else has options there in US.

There are plenty of systems out there and up here they get m any deals on them including install this time of year.

If I was keeping the V70 basic I would put a simple system in as neither remote likes to lock the car. Both are ok opening it though.

SWMBO recommends the Honeywell one , fits all cars.

After I start her car, she says “Honey, well done!”

Neil - I had the Vipers in two other vehicles and yes, very nice! The V70 is “my” car which means I don’t get many “bells and whistles”, because I’m “Dad”. So just looking to get a remote starter. KISS is my goal.

Abscate- must be part of the “Honeydo” Line...

Don't forget about Dad! He needs toys too. Kids are hardy, let them put on a few more layers and learn to use manual locking!

Good luck with the hunt.

My '96 850 came with a Code-Alarm (aquired by Audiovox (now Voxx)) remote start system already installed. I don't have anything to compare it to, because it's the only one I've ever had.

Things I like about it:
- it was already installed!
- starts the car from inside the house and thru 2 walls (maybe 80' away?)
- batteries last a very, very long time (5 years-ish?)
- remote lock/unlock, too
- climb in, insert key and turn to on position to drive away. If you touch the brake without the key in, the engine dies (simple anti-theft).

Thing I don't like about it:
- difficult, blinking-light-style configuration (with nested menus, even). Kind of a pain, but it's an older system and I've only had to make changes twice (maybe not such a big deal...).

Good luck.

Neil - well, we are kind of already doing that, the lock actuators only work about 20% of the time so they have to wait for me to unlock my door anyway. The old man here is getting soft. I am basically looking for a way to start in the morning before I head out to work and then hit it again before I head home at the end of the day.

Splats - Great stuff! This is all I am really looking for, is straightforward. Thank you for the information.

As somebody whod prefer not to install a remote start myself bigger issue than brand/type is the shop installing it IMO. If you ever run into problems no shop usually wants to deal with these systems unless they did the install originally.
Of course if you’re handy enough to install and fix them that’s a non-issue, but for those of us who aren’t quite there Id recommend a shop that’s been around for a long time and has a good reputation.

One other idea - what about a circulating block heater instead? I had one on a heavy duty timer on my old convertible. Had it setup to start 15 minutes before I had to leave for work. Literally unplug it, start car. Go. Heat coming from the vents instantly.

Is the goal the "instant" heat or the defrost, or both?
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

Ideally both, but if I had to choose, it would be defrost...I’m husky so I don’t mind being cold, but driving w an ice covered windshield is a little challenging. ;)
