We're having a snow catastrophe in Atlanta - what is that you may ask? It snowed and its cold enough to stick
At least it isnt like a cold snap in SoCal - 68F
I grew up just south of Buffalo, NY and went to college in Troy. After that I lived in Chicago for 8 years. These snow events in Atlanta always make me smile. Today we have 5 inches and counting ... its a snow sky. I could go pull the codes but I'd have to get out a broom and clean off the car - memories of apartment life in Chicago. Instead I've got a fire in the fireplace, a glass of wine in my hand and a movie on the TV. I'm now thinking that the volvo's possible hurt may be an opportunity to really tear into it.

I remember around Kings Bay/St. Mary's being shut down anytime it snowed (also known as a dusting...) except on base.

Love Delta... One of the few airlines where you didn't worry about the FAA and DOT both trying to ground them.

I love Delta too, because United copies everything they do, only 85% as well. (I'm Global Services on UA , which I have to admit is pretty good, too. Mrs Abscate just got the Mercedes ride in between a MCT+1 at IAD, courtesy of a spouse status match)

I'm surprised you guys down in Atlanta got more snow than us in Charlotte! My uncle lives just north of Atlanta and he's sent pictures of the snow in his yard. Meanwhile we got some sleet, rain, and a little bit of snow, but it's too warm to stick. Although my little snowflake light actually had to come on yesterday.

I flew UA in one of the last remaining international DC10s from Melbourne Australia in 1991. We were really close to the tail wing. It was a rough ride but it got us to Honolulu for our honeymoon in fine style. At the time George senior was heading the Gulf War and gas masks were on sale everywhere.

I hope that removing the sump reveals all.

So, I pulled the codes this afternoon and heres what I got.

P0455, my most loyal friend - its back! Unreklated since I was getting it on and off every time the temp drops

P0301 - misfire on cylinder 1.

That's it. I fired it up to see how it runs once it was cool. Well, its not good - so rough in fact that I only let it run for about 10 seconds. It sounds like a machine gun (Gatling gun)and vibrates like an out of balance washing machine. Not that surprising with a P0301 code. The oil leak on the pan is from the top adjacent to the seal erikv11 mentioned. My guess is that seal failed and caused the pressure loss.

My concern is that the loss of oil pressure did some damage. After Christmas I'll dive into it. In the meantime any and all advice would be appreciated. As of about a month ago the V70 is a spare car so I have plenty of time to address the problem.

Anybody have any ideas now that I have the codes?

Well, you're definitely not firing on that cylinder if it feels like a washing machine. Before you jump to conclusions though, make sure you're getting fuel/spark on cylinder 1 just in case. I doubt the misfire is unrelated to the oil pressure loss given the situation, but it's worth a shot.
So the oil leak is from a rear cam seal, and it trailed down to the pan/oil filter area? If that's the case, I would replace the cam seal since it's a relatively quick and easy job, make sure the oil is full, and start it up again and see what happens.
If it's still running badly, compression test time.

At this point, I'd say you have engine/head damage or oil starvation. I feel I am accurate in saying, these engines will not "sound like a machine gun (Gatling gun)and vibrates like an out of balance washing machine." while running on 4 cylinders, unless those conditions mentioned earlier are present.
I would check antifreeze level and check for antifreeze in the oil. It probably can't hurt to remove head cover and see if there is any visible damage there or evidence of 'dryness'...then maybe the oil pan as well.
Also when was the timing belt and idler changed? If timing jumped or idler bearing failed you may get this damage but I would expect more codes. As far as I know, these codes are not going to help to troubleshoot this condition. So all the previous advise/speculation, on the course of action, in this thread is valid.

P0455 Evaporative Emission Control System Tank detected, Gross leak.
Gas cap not getting a hermetical seal. Cracked lines between the Evaporative Emission tank and the fuel tank. Some guy will pressurize the lines with about 3 psi of air pressure then go looking for the leak with a spray bottle of soapy water, ears and tactile senses.

P0301 - misfire on cylinder 1.
Could be many things, start with #1 Plug wire, #1 Spark plug, #1 Fuel injector, #1 Compression.

I still thing your oil problem maybe the oil pump which is right in front of the front main oil seal, where your seeing the bigger oil leak. The oil pump is mounted on the end of the crank shaft, the harmonic balancer is mounted on the oil pump. A defective oil pump would explain the low oil pressure, the big oil leak where you see one, an out of balance condition and a gatling gun noise.

Use a Mechanics Stethoscope to pin point that gatling gun noise. Isolating where the noise is coming from will narrow things down.
