DIY: 1998 Volvo S70 GLT Radiator (Supplement to FCP youtube video)

Just replaced the “Crymoax” Radiator, installed by Volvo dealer in 2010 at 130K or so.

Anyway, there are so many DIYs and youtube videos out there, the purpose of this DIY is a “Supplement”.
- So, please watch the FCP video on youtube in detail:

* Note that the youtube video forgot to mention the bottom 10-mm bolts that go from the AC Condenser ---> Radiator.

* Car is now 7y/57K miles later, the Cryomax rad cracked at 2 places:

1. Driver’s side Mounting tab.

2. Tiny vertical crack below the Passenger’s side Upper Outlet, only leaked coolant when hot (under pressure).
- The Cryomax looks ”OEM” with rubber mounts etc., but from what I understand it is made in Taiwan, so my theory is back in 2010 with P.O., Volvo bought the radiator from some local supplier such as Napa etc. and installed it, b/c I am not aware of Cryomax being OEM supplier.

- I thought it was leaking from the cooler fitting, so I tried all kinds of stuff (garden hose washer, copper washer etc. etc.) to no avail, only after the rad was removed then I realized the minor crack is below the upper outlet, difficult to see in the car. Interesting crack, very different from the typical circular crack that detaches from the radiator.

TOOLS:
- 7-mm (for clamps or screwdriver), 10-mm, 12-mm sockets.
- Torx #25 key.
- Circlip removal tool (for cooler retainers).
- Floor jack or scissor jack.

PROCEDURE:

1. Watch the youtube video.

2. Drain coolant as shown, during refill, I use coffee filter paper to filter dirt, bugs that flew into coolant.

3. Remove battery and undo the battery tray and place it sideway.

4. Once the old radiator is out, transfer the rubber mount to the new radiator. Tip: drive out the metal sleeve, then the rubber mount. Note new Nissens rad has 4 new retainers for the cooler lines.
* Note: once the radiator is supported by floor jack and the two (2) 12-mm bolts removed, you can lean the radiator to the REAR of the car to access the 10-mm bolts.

5. To transfer clips to new radiator, note:
* The 2 tops clips: place the threaded portion to the FRONT of the car.
* The 6 side clips, place the threaded portion to the REAR of the car.

That is it, not difficult but take your time. I did the whole thing with the car on driveway (no need to jack the front up b/c the radiator comes out through the top).

Run the car around the blocks, coolant level will drop down to the bottom of the reservoir. Wait for engine to cool down, add coolant (50-50) until it is at Max. Keep checking coolant level for 1 week and check the radiator on and off for leak.

The Nissens Rad looks good, time will tell!
