DIM works , but .....

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

DIM works , but .....

Post by wikan1 »

2004 S80 2.5t AWD. dash lights at about 1/2 of normal.
Entire area where light controls are is dead.
gas flap release switch, fog light switches front and rear, and thumbwheel for brightness dead, headlight switch dead.
high beams will flash, but not stay on ( am guessing because I can't turn the light switch on) daytime driving lights on all the time.
I can't seem to set off the security siren, even if I open the door while locked, etc.
have read about CEM and DIM, but can't find anything matching these symptoms.
All else works- horn wipers, interior lights, etc.
Hoping to find some help and see if anyone else has had this happen, or good advice pointing me in the right direction!
Thanks much!!
should have mentioned- pulled all fuses under hood and interior and trunk fuse panels . swapped relays, makes no difference, and no blown fuses. Just couldn't get that lucky....

Having a similar problem with my 2000. All back lit messages, clock odometer & radio were very dim and When I pulled the light control block from the dash (pops right out) and checked the connection everything came on. After car is turned off and restarted everything is dead again. Messing with the connection brings it back up. Clearly a short of some sort in the wire cluster or on a circuit panel of the light control itself. Will follow up after I figure it out, but my money's on a bad cold solder joint in the light control.

If you're suspecting your CEM and DIM, the guys at Xemodex have good solutions and can repair most of them. http://www.xemodex.com/ You might check out their web site and compare it against your symptoms.

There are also Ebay members that offer repair service (search DIM repair service), less expensive than Xemodex

Make sure NOT to connect the car battery while the DIM is not connected in the car

Pulled Light Control/dimmer/Fog Light control block, cracked it open and tried heating up solder connections to 3 wire connection pins on board to achieve better connection. Partial success, but still out much of the time. Pulled one off same model year (2000) at the junkyard, swapped the trim and it worked flawlessly. Not a part that requires computer work.
