Re: Cleaning DIY: 850 IAC (Idle Air control valve) cleaning

Quicken..your 10 valve Volvo wasn’t sold in the US so you won’t find a lot of info apply to that engine here. It does look like the 10 valve uses a different IAC though, and all our parts places do show it no longer available

Thank you all who posted a reply. I will try the rubbing alcohol, would 70% ethanol work the same as 70% isopropanol? Just wondering since I happen to have a whole bunch of ethanol but can't seem to find isopropanol, regardless it's easy enough to get 70% isopropanol.

Thanks again to you guys! Really appreciated it.

There is no harm in trying out the ethanol. Higher percentage is probably better, if you have it available. You'll know if it is working - a lot of dark crud will come out.

I cleaned my IAC about two weeks ago using isopropanol, though simply shaking the IAC with isopropanol in the tubes didn't really do anything at all.

Instead, I carefully operated the spring-laden valve piston with the end of a teaspoon handle and let it slide back repeatedly, while I kept the tubes filled with isopropanol. This freed enough of the built-up black whatever was inside and my idle at operating temperature has been rock steady at 850 RPMs since then.

I used a teaspoon only because I was cleaning the IAC over the kitchen sink and the nearest tool for the job was in the kitchen drawer next to me, and because it had a nice rounded end that wouldn't scratch the insides of the IAC.

I just had the same problem pop up yesterday with my 95 850 GLT. The temp here in Iowa got up to 92 so had the a/c on during an afternoon drive. I noticed that after getting off the interstate and entering stop and go traffic that the car was running sluggish during stops at red lights. The a/c load is usually noticeable when at idle or low speed but this was a very pronounced missing. Eventually the check engine light came on. I stopped and picked up a bottle of tekron thinking it may be fuel injector related. The car ran fine on the highway going home, but missed again when stopping entering town. Read the codes and it said misfire cylinder 2, misfire cylinder 5 and random misfire. I pulled off the hoses to the throttle body and cleaned the area plate with carb and choke cleaner. I drove the car and it was a little better but still hesitating at while stopped and A/C running. This morning I pulled off the IAC and soaked it good with carb and choke cleaner. I also cleaned the electrical connections as they looked to have some corrosion. I was able to reuse the clams on the IAC hoses since I was careful removing them. Cleaned the MAF sensor since I had things apart. Reassembled and took it for a drive. Runs great!! I like an easy fix like that. .

Great tutorial. THANKS. Only left to explain, how to twist in your hand the IAC valve to be sure it is rotating feely... I have it unmounted and cleaned, but wasn't able to twist it in my hand... I guess i can just connect the electronic connection and twist the key a few times (not turn the motor on, just switch on) to make it turn a few times... please explain

Sorry it wasn't clear... What I meant by twisting was that if you rotate the body of the IAC valve back and forth in your hand (as if you were twisting and shaking up a container of juice before opening it), you will feel, see and hear that the metal plate inside the valve will rotate freely too. Before cleaning, if you try the twisting test the plate will stick. After cleaning, the plate should rotate easily.

Bumping this thread for markone

When the Duchess got back home she had a bit of a wonky idle, which we cured by unplugging and replugging in the IAC. My guess is it needs cleaning.

You can still get these new but they are pricy , $330, or so

Junkyard pull much easier on wallet.

Part number 9454745

This part is buried in the section for ‘ regulating fuel supply for automatic transmission’ and called the ‘ control slide’ or ISC Happy hunting

Hoses are still available as of sep 2020
