Help, Advice, Owners' Discussion and DIY Tutorials on Volvo's stylish, distinctive P2 platform cars sold as model years 2001-2007 (North American market year designations).
Thanks. Just realized I might have started posting in the wrong forum part, since my car is a 2000 model. Sorry for that. Think the SW and protocols used in my car are a mix of Volvo proprietary vs standard, depending on which HW module we're talking about (ABS, ETM, etc). Used to know quite a lot of details about this but that was years ago. Long forgotten. Anyway, I find the delivery time for a DiCE unit is at least 3-4 weeks. Any chance I can use a KKL V409 cable instead? I guess yet another option is to rebuild my old ETM with a TPS from Sacer or so?
Hey Doublebug. Looks like I need to replace my ETM and read through the forum and appears you may be able to assist with getting ETM software installed on new ETM. I have VIDA and DICE available and have used them recently. I actually replaced my coil packs and spark plugs last week thinking the issue was due to a bad coil pack and things ran OK for a bit but then it appears it definitely is the ETM. I reset the check engine light with the VIDA. Was wondering if you may be able to assist with ETM? Thank you sir.
Silviasmother Dice is what's needed from 1999 and up. I personally programmed over 100 ETM units with Doublebug's help on my now sold 2000 V70 using a Dice so there is no issue with this year model. You might want to breeze over to the Vida/Dice and code readers section of the forum to have a further look. Also this video I shot 5 years ago shows me fumbling around with Dice and Vida on a 1999 V70:
Ali Express has sellers of Dice and if you look at the feedback and choose wisely you can find a seller that provides DHL postage for a little more cost.
After a quick scan on AliExpress just now I found a company called OBDOBD2 Electronic Tech Co. Ltd which offers a Dice for around USD$80 and postage for under USD$30 with DHL or EMS. They have over 300 transactions for Dice sales.
No one here has usedb that cable you mention that I recall.
I don't see how a rebuild with a Sacer unit will help when you have a firmware compatibility issue. Besides I already mentioned that ETM programming from a turbo motor to non turbo is different.

Thanks, with an optional rebuild using a 105 USD Sacer unit I was referring to my old 9186793 ETM, which is already loaded with the correct SW since it came straight out of my car. Turns out the local Volvo garage asks for appx 115 USD to do the reprogramming of the new 8644347 (ETM reload S70, V70 - part number 9438298).
Had a look at https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Newest- ... 91509.html and that's not a bad option, thanks for the tip 80 USD for the product and free DHL shipping from China with 8-17 days delivery time. Will have to keep my fingers crossed it doesn't get stuck in customs, though.
The Sacer can be ordered from within the EC so there's no problem with customs or toll.
Hmm... will have to think this over a day or two. Very grateful for your kind help sofar.
Yes your old unit is rebuild-able but ONLY if certain codes are present ECM-9150 (sensor 1) or ECM-9160 (sensor 2) in addition with usually ECM-91A7 (throttle position-faulty control) and possibly ECM-959F Accelerator position sensor as well. Sometimes also ECM-1A5D (throttle communication)
Other codes such as faulty current (can't remember the exact code) means there is a motor problem or a board problem so a contact-less kit won't help
So that leaves you needing to buy a Dice in order to determine which codes you have if you don't want to waste 3 hours rebuilding a useless throttle unit

You're right. I'll swing by a friend and check the fault codes. Or use my BSR PPC2. Remounted the old ETM and the ETS light came on again after the third test drive. Car ran fine, though. But there should be up-to-date DTCs to read now.
Doubt an engine problem since the ETS light stayed unlit with the new ETM, despite the car running badly during 5 or 6 test drives. And since the car ran fine with the old ETM mounted there are probably no leaks that cause any problems.
So, new ETM (definitely) needs a reload or the old (might) need a rebuild. I'm getting pretty good at ETM removal/installation...pipe connected to the ETM is still a pain to get properly in place...but practice makes perfect I guess.
Hmm, just checked a 23-page Tech-net Note 25-149-E dated 03-03-2006, stating that a V70 -00 ETM replacement requires 8644347 (ETM module), 9438298 (ETM reload) and 30677005 (ECM gasoline upgrade), and this REGARDLESS wether the car is a Turbo or NA model. So my guess is the problem in my case wasn't the new ETM or the SW installed in the ETM, but rather the software in the ECM needing an upgrade. Interesting that part numbers are identical regardless of V70 -00 model (Turbo or non-Turbo).
I ordered a Sacer, and I'm waiting for it to arrive. Just for fun. Think I'll give it a try using the Sacer with my old 9186793 ETM, and if that doesn't work out I'll install the new 8644347 ETM and try the ECM upgrade 30677005. The new ETM should already have 9438298 loaded. Don't know if 9438298 (ETM reload) and 30677005 (ECM gasoline upgrade) need some kind of pairing process, though. Guess I'll find out one way or another.
9438298 (ETM reload) and 30677005 (ECM gasoline upgrade) that numbers is just for ordering.
Particular numbers of software depends on car MY and configuration.
