Fuel Pump Problem on 850?
Fuel Pump Problem on 850?
Have a 1995 850 With 250K on the clock...Driving last week on the highway and the car died. Tried to turn over, would idle rough around 500 RPM but wouldnt idle normal. had it towed. Next day guy at the shop says your car starts fine, no problem. On the way home, stalled a few times, but restarted. Here it is a week later and it died again. Any ideas? Fuel pump? I see fuel pumps are $300 on Groton. Anyhwere else to get one, I have 250 on this car, not going to keep it forever, even though I love it and have had it for almost 10 years. Is it easy enough for someone with a good understanding of cars like myself to fix the fuel pump myslef?

Lots of possibilities...certainly fuel pump, but also fuel pump relay...or even fuel filter (check it out first- the cheapest). Could also be the MAF sensor.
Btw, I'm moving this post to the 850 section where it belongs.

You can narrow down the problem quite easily. Remove the housing around the fuse box under the hood and then remove relay number 103. There are 4 terminal numbers molded into the plastic on that relay, 31, 31b, 87, and 15. Make a jumper wire that fits between the sockets corresponding with the 15 and 87 lugs on the relay and see how the car runs. Whenever you arrive at your destination be sure to remove the jumper wire. If it runs OK either repair or replace the fuel pump relay. If you still have issues with the jumper in place then chances are it is the fuel pump itself.
The pump itself failing normally leads to a total failure that can be remedied by taking a large stick or a ball bat to the bottom of the fuel tank. That fix only works once or twice. The fuel pump relay failures tend to be a bit flakier with the intermittent problems you describe.

Sounds a lot like my fuel pump problems. I was going down the interstate and ir just died on me. I was able to get it to idle very roughly and then it just quit. Later the same day, it ran enough to get me about 15 miles and then would restart after a few minutes and go a little farther. It finally quit altogether after about 50 miles from where I had originally stopped. After I got it towed home, I tried it again and could get it to idle. I was getting some pressure at the fuel rail. So I figured it couldn't be the fuel pump. Needless to say it was. I was getting pressure, just not enough. I would change the filter after I checked the relay as suggested by Lee. But my money is on the pump.

One more thing you might want to check Advanced Auto or Autozone if you need a pump. They don't stock it, but they can get it a day or two. They are also only about $255 for it.
