2006 V70XC Timing Belt Change, sticker?

Post by woodchopper »

Just went from 1998 V70 to 2006 V70. On the 98 we lost the engine due to tensioner failing. The 2006 had no record of timing belt change. We decided on this car we wouldn't take a chance and we went to Volvo dealer and got new belt and tensioner, I hope.
What's bothering me is they didn't put a sticker on saying it was changed. I have distrust for garages and we're terrified of losing another engine. My mind wanders, and it's wondering if they took a look, saw it was good and just took the $600.
A dealer wouldn't do that, would they? :?

Did you ask them why they didn't add the sticker? It's included in the belt box.

Also if you pop the cover you should be able to tell quite easily if it's brand new or not.

I don't think an authorised dealer would rip you off quite as openly as that though. They'll do it by charging too well instead ;-)

Your receipt should show the parts used/replaced, the tech who did it, and the hours spent.

I would pull the cam cover and look if it will make you rest easier!

+1 on inspecting the job.
The accessory belt comes off real easily. Just relieve the tensioner's force.
Make a sketch of the routing ahead of time.

A single 10mm bolt holds the cover on. You can see the entire job.

Of course, it IS cold out.

You could also pop the other side of the cover with just two screws on the top engine cover. Won't let you see more than the belt and the cam gears though but enough to tell if the belt itself is new or not.

How many km does it have? Had the car all repair/maintenance paperwork?

They are supposed to place a sticker. Now, are they doing it every time? Perhaps no. Did they indeed replace the parts? If you look at the belt you will know if it's new. A local knowledgeable garage in european cars may help you with this, try searching on local.google.com Ask them also to look at the water pump just in case it was replaced in the past with a cheap part. And while there, a check on the serpentine belt components is also good, the a/c compressor pulley doesn't last very long

I'd go back to the service manager and ask that they put on a sticker...clearly needed for records, especially if you sell the car later.

One of the things I like to do when anyone else works on my car, I ask to see the used parts (ie. especially the timing belt). It's always good to know what it looks like in case you want to make an adjustment to the next service for that component.

I agree with Ratnalle, remove a couple torx screws and you can tell if the timing belt is new.

Back in march of 16 my S80 had it's belt, wheels, seals, and water pump at my Volvo dealer. No sticker was placed as the dealer reports all repairs which can be seen online souch as through carfax. In fact every ticket on your car at the dealer is viewable down to a lightbulb.

We just bought a used C70 for our daughter and i saw the car's complete history printed off of carfax which showed the dealer had just changed the timing belt +++ as well as every oil change. The stickers would definitely be useful afterdealer installation not electronically reported. June

Since the sticker is delivered in the box I don't really see the online record as a reason not to install the sticker as well. It's not much different from before when you had both the reciept and the sticker.

Stickers can come off, receipts get lost, but a electronic record is permanent. My car has no sticker so are you implying somehow the work wasn't done since the mechanic didn't stick a sticker?

I read someone imply the OP should open the cover to see. Work performed by a Volvo service department is guaranteed, reported online, as well as the OP has the receipt to prove the work complete. Who buys a modern used car and does not look at carfax? June

Oh its $1,000,00 without water pump and $1,500.00 with water pump service at Volvo.
