Volvo’s history is intrinsically intertwined with the 5-cylinder engine. More than any other auto maker (besides maybe Audi), Volvo’s name has become almost synonymous with this rather idiosyncratic engine over the last 30 years. At the time, it was a perfect compromise between the 6-cylinder’s power and the 4-cylinders size and efficiency.

+1 on wanting more history.
I've read that "Porsche designed the 5 cylinder engine for Volvo". Know-it-alls vehemently reject this as impossible! Heavens.
Had VAG designed it, would that qualify as a Porsche design?

I can't say all 5 cylinder had Porsche designers hands on, but in 1994 the dealer video and literature boasted the upcoming T-5R was tweaked and designed in a joint effort between Volvo and Porsche for the T-5R model. By the second year the push that Porsche was part of it was gone. BTW the car had a harsh ride but had great seats and handling was great for that time. Excellent lecture on the 5 banger engine.
The reason for 4-cylinder turbo engine is fuel efficiency and direct fuel injection technology (with its own problems of carbon build-up in Intake valves).

Porsche was not a big company making many cars back in the 80's. There was (and is) a division that did lots of engine NVH and performance work as they had developed some methods and equipment to analyze noise and had expertise in cylinder head flow and combustion optimizing. Some pretty mundane hardware has benefitted from their expertise.
