Angle gear box XC90 V8
Angle gear box XC90 V8
Hello, is is possible to remove the angle gear assembly on a V8 with the engine in the car? It's for sure tight and need the exhaust manifold removed. Just want to make sure it's possible before I start dismantling. Thanks for any info on this. CHarles Falk

Engine can stay in place (support from above) but subframe and a bunch of other stuff needs to come off. Front exhaust manifold can stay, just needs bolts loosened to get everything out. Rear manifold comes off completely as does driveline. Best if you can get a copy of VIDA for this job, it's not like a 2.5T, that variant has space.
If you're doing this because you you're pretty sure lost AWD, can see a post I did a couple years back on my '08- http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread ... gle-Gear-) plus another more recent post-http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread ... D-Failure-!-!
And if you're sure you lost the gear (can turn the driveline with all 4 wheels on the ground, see this link http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread ... ical-Check for a good example), you'll maybe need a new gear (~$1500). Not seeing too many just sleeves with the V8 on the various forums, by the time the gear goes bad in this powerplant variant, it's usually both the sleeve and gear input spline that are shot (can see failure photos in both attached posts).
For gear replacement if it becomes necessary, caution should be used as there are more than a few PNs for this part and, for cars before around 2009, the OE replacement has a new PN which requires a different bracket, bolts, and heat shield. This is noted in VIDA and on most of the OE reseller sites.
Good luck !
