Transmission shift

Post by Ayata »

Hi,

i own two 850's, one is 2.0T5, the other is 2.3T5. 2.0 is for my normal drive, but 2.3 is something different.
ex owner of 2.3 did something to the car (i don't know exactly) so it gives sth around 300hp. i have some questions to modify it more but not much :)

1. Can i shift the transmission with a s60r ot s60t5 transmission? will i have to make too much modification? will it fit in place?
2. i will be using 850r wheels (7 arm one, i love it), which type/brand brake kits (disc, caliper) can i use?
3. ex owner modified the suspension also (the car is now 7cm down) though it is very good on the high way, very noisy in the city drive. i want this type of drive; low and rigid on highway, high and comfortable in the city but i want to make the change easily. i heard air lift suspension is more uncomfortable in the high position. Coil over is hard to change the height. is there any other options?

Thanks in advance

Regards

You can use an S60R transmission in your 850. I know it's a fairly direct swap, but it does take a little modification. Check out volvospeed.com, lots of people over there have done M66 swaps on their P80s.
With the 850R wheels (I assume Volans) you can upgrade to the 302mm rotors from the 2000 V70R. All that requires is the caliper bracket (which is hard to find new, sometimes they are available, sometimes they are not) and the 302mm rotor. You will use the stock caliper and pads. As for brands, there is a large selection. I've heard good things about Zimmerman rotors and Akebono pads, but as I said, there are many options.
For the suspension, the most affordable and easy option is lowering springs. They might be too low depending on the conditions of the roads around you, but my cousin has the iPd lowering springs (harsher ride, "linear" type springs that are more geared towards the track than street) and the car is still very easily driveable around town.
There are other options from H&R, Eibach, and other companies that are "progressive" springs (more comfortable on the highway than linear) that don't lower the car as much (1.3 inches vs. 1.7 inches) but are probably more practical.
Coilovers are an option of course, but aren't the easiest to source for our cars (at least in the States) and as you said, it's not so easy to go and adjust the height quickly.
I'm not too knowledgeable about air suspension on these cars, or any for that matter. I don't know of anyone running it on an 850.

You can swap to newer transmission, if you are talking manual shift. The automatics are not compatible.

+1 on 302 brakes, but you also need longer brake lines that are available for cars with the 302mm brake rotors/caliper brackets.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Yes, you also need the longer brake hoses. Forgot about that one.

I am also assuming the OP is referring to a manual transmission, because as you said, the newer autos aren't compatible.

Thanks a lot for your help.
i was planning to swap the transmission with a newer (5 or 6 speed) transmission (s6075 or s60r). is it possible without making too much modification?
i heard about hyraulic suspension system (not air). one friend told me s60r has hydraulic suspension and we can apply it directly to 850. is it possible?

Thanks in advance

I don't know if the S60R/V70R's Four C suspension is compatible with P80s. That may be something to look into, though.

Thanks a lot for your help.
1) i was planning to swap the transmission with a newer (5 or 6 speed) transmission (s6075 or s60r). is it possible without making too much modification?
Does this mean you have a 4speed automatic? If so, no the transmissions will not interchange.
2) i heard about hydraulic suspension system (not air). one friend told me s60r has hydraulic suspension and we can apply it directly to 850. is it possible?
No, your car will not support the electronics necessary to control the 4C suspension from a P2/R car.
