Clinking/clanking noise 2004 Volvo xc90

Post by crw4bama »

I have a 2004 Volvo XC90 with 180,000 miles there is a ticking/clanking rattling noise sounds as if coming from drivers side only makes it when accelerating especially if going up hill stops as soon as stop accelerating and once on interstate it stops completely once at steady speed on cruise control

Get under your car and check your exhaust heat shields all the way back to the rear. Mine was making a noise in the back before the rear differential. Hopefully it is just a rusty heat shield.

Agreed. Had a loose heat shield at the front on my '04 XC90 a few years back. IIRC, it was just one bolt that needed to be cranked down to resolve. You can get to it from underneath, with the splash pan removed.

I would suggest that if it's a heat shield the noise would be there whether they were accelerating or not, if the noise stops when you stop accelerating I'm thinking it's your axle. A failing axle will make more noise when it is under load such as going up hill or getting her up to speed and then eventually it will make a lot of noise all the time so time will tell.
