If all I want to do is check the clarity of the fluid, is there an easier way to do that than messing with the dipstick?

You can still try to undo the return hose at the radiator (engine off), risk is breaking the green clip. May keep a piece of paper towel underneath to catch some fluid, see how clear it is. Some videos on Youtube like this

I guess that's probably the easiest way. Where do you buy replacement clips and how much do they cost?

Lots of places sell the green clips. Get the clip and the pair of yellow O rings which seal the cooling hose's end.
eEuroparts, IPD, FCPGroton all sell 'em. They're inexpensive ($4-$5) in the grand scheme.

One thing to remember is that the action of that clip isn't much. By that I mean, when you press in on both sides (intuitive) it doesn't feel like the clip moved at all. All you're doing is clearing a pair of matched "buttress teeth" which catch an internal shoulder.

From the earlier part of this thread: After you release the dipstick's catch and pull it out "the 2 inches", simply bend it to clear any obstruction. The dipstick is quite short and thin.

The cluttered nature of this operation isn't a "Swedish thing". It's due to cramming the rest of the car's plumbing into the space available. Our Volvos aren't the only vehicles with cramped underhood conditions.

The payoff is that beautiful low hood line, no air resistance, great road view, great gas mileage
