My 2011 V60 D5 has been in the shop for 3 weeks while the mechanics try to figure out what's wrong with it.
Initially it wouldn't start and I had an intermittent warning light on starting "! Brake Failure. Stop Safely". After taking the key out and opening the door it eventually started. A few days later I got more warning lights "Immobiliser Try Start Again". "SRS airbag service urgent". And I couldn't get it to start at all. It was towed to the dealer who said their was an ant nest in the computer module and sent it away for repair. Now he says there are other problems with the other module and will need replacement. This is going to take 10 days to ship from Sweden and cost us $3500! Our insurance says they don't cover insect damage or computer problems so I think we are screwed. My question is do I get rid of this car? Are these sorts of problems common? The ants will always be here so I just don't know quite what to do...

I'd say fix it, never heard of ants infesting a car computer. It has to be one of those rare things. June

That price is in NZD (approximately $2500 USD)? Probably about right.
It took them a little while to diagnose a CANBUS failure, likely at the CEM or ABS module. Mech says ants? LOL ha ha, I get it. Lingo for "computer bug". I've known a mechanic or two that might state it that way. Mechs that have been around a while, usually independents and some old timey parts counter guys can be notorious: they're trying to lighten the mood over an expensive repair with a little inside humor. But it only works from your perspective if you get it. I doubt your problem has anything to do with literal six legged formicidae.
