I'm in a bit of a bind financially. My S60R has 235/40/18s on it, and one of my front tires has a bulge the size of an egg in the sidewall thanks to the potholes all around town.
I've located a set of used snows 235/45/18 - can I run these for a couple of months until I can afford a new set of all seasons? Or will they rub against the body?
Thanks.

Yeah, I know, don't hate me:) I'll put proper tires on just as soon as this financial crunch is in my rear view mirror.
In the end, I didn't buy the 235/45/18 snows. I put 2 brand new Coopers on, and drove them for 500 miles before my next disaster hit - a blown wheel bearing. I can't catch a break right now. But I'm loving the Coopers. I drive like an old man, anyway, so performance tires might not be worth it for me.

I'm mostly just amazed that there seems to be such an acceptance of "all season" tyres in the US. To me and most other people over here who care about driving safely they're rather considered "no season"-tyres. They're poor in the summer and at best poor in the winter. The best thing that can be said is that they're better than a summer tyre in winter and a winter tyre in summer.
I don't exactly race my car either but the day will come some day when I'll need every bit of braking power that can be had and the tyres are a very important part of that.
The total cost of tyres will be the same or lower since summer tyres last much longer than the softer all season rubber when it's warm out. Sure, the initial investment is higher but since every car here has two sets of tyres from the factory most used cars are sold with two sets as well. I'm guessing from the tyre topics on here that that isn't a given even in areas of the US with actual winter.

They are per definition. They can just be more or less useless at either use case compared to a dedicated tyre.erikv11 wrote: ↑09 Feb 2018, 13:28 Not every all-season tire is no-season.

That said I don't even think those are sold on this side for the puddle.

I agree that a dedicated tire will perform its one job better, but to me "more or less useless" is like saying "more or less dead." I tend to see a lot of different grays out there, not just black and white.
Those are excellent tires for all but ice, where they are still (only?) good. Nothing beats a dedicated snow tire.
