2005 v70 p0455
2005 V70 2.4na 160k throws a p0455 when fuel level reaches just below 1/2 tank. It will also display the loose filler cap message at around 7/8 tank before setting the MIL. The fuel cap seal appeared to be in good shape, but I have also tried an aftermarket cap just for yucks with the same result. I attached a garden hose to the j-shaped hose just under the fuel filler with the large hose barb on it and blew into it. It seems to hold that small amount of pressure just fine, with no audible leaks, and when the gas cap is loosened when pressurized in this manner, the pressure is released. If my understanding that if one of the hoses on the charcoal canister is bad, it would not hold this pressure. Looking for some advice in methodically diagnosing this. I've read that a worn pump can draw excessive current, which sets the MIL thinking that it's requiring too much to pressurize the system during its monitor cycle. All of that stuff looks like a bear to service in this car, as it's tucked up above the rear suspension. Any tips on R & R of pump and hoses would also be appreciated...Thanks ....Steve

The P2 EVAP system is much more robust than the P80 cars. It uses a positive pressure pump rather than the vacuum system of the earlier cars. A smoke test is the best way to find leaks in place - if you don't want to do that, you have to remove each pipe and check for holes splits leaks.
There are couple of people in the trade on this Forum who might be able to give you guidance on what fails on the P2 systems, most of us not in the trade haven't seen enough failure to do anything but guess

Disconnect battery, remove rear seat, pull the access hatch. Some of the side panels in the rear luggage compartment need to come out to access bolts retaining the seat.
Watch videos.
Just be aware if you connect the battery with seat belt sensors unplugged you'll set the SRS FAULT CODE.

When the code comes is not just a function of fault but also of engine management. If you use your AC, go over 60 on every trip, the evap system will never complete and you won’t code, even if you have evap faults.

Thanks for all of the responses. jonesg, I think your post is for a fuel pump. I managed to find an evap pump r&r write-up for an xc70,which looks similar to mine.

This car commutes 40 miles on the highway daily and the 'auto' position on the climate control panel manages to cycle the a/c compressor occasionally, even in New England winter, so even with those events occuring, it still sets the code like clockwork at just under 1/2 tank. I clear it with my generic reader just so I don't have to look at the light.

Gas tank also has to be between 1/4-3/4 full. It sounds like you hit the parameters on your drive perfectly.
Smokes test is fastest and cheapest way to find the faulty part - guessing on symptom isn't going to be fast or cheap.

Has anyone personally smoke tested one of these? Where do you access the system? I haven't located an EVAP service port as is present in other vehicles.

I'm pretty sure I can borrow a smoker from a mechanic buddy/ Has anyone tested one of these?

I'll take a peek at mine tomorrow and see if there is a logical place to start
