Lost plastic pin for door panel clip? Here is a replacement

Post by ogatrulle »

I took the interior front door panel off my 2006 V70 for the first time. I was careless and lost one of the center pins for the panel retainers in the grass. The replacement clips are only a dollar or two, plus another six bucks to ship, but I was annoyed at the idea of spending so much money for the loss of such a simple piece.

Round toothpicks are too narrow. I gave brief thought to looking through the kids' lego blocks, but they are teenagers now and the toys are put away in the attic.

I was at Ace Hardware for another project and spotted "3/32in x 1/2in metal dowels" among their vast assortment of whatsits. They are a good fit and cost 30 cents. The 1/8in dowels are too wide. Dowel shown in photo:

I've also found that solid core plumbing solder cut to just the right length works perfect. I had a few of those little things go flying onto a limestone drive a year ago. I grabbed the garden hose and found a couple of them as they float. Since then I've been much more careful when I remove a door panel.

There is an updated design clip available that looks like this:

The center pin stays locked into the outer part when you push in to release them so they don't get lost. I think these new style clips are intended to be single use/throw away. But if you fiddle with them for about 10 seconds you can reset and reuse them.

I thought that was the old reusable kind that has been replaced with the kind in the first post. All the clips on my - 04 is of that kind and the -00 also had them. Can be reused lots of times.

There are some of those reusable ones on one of my rear doors. I wasn't aware these were actually an older design. They work fine. I prefer them. Only thing I've noticed is if you reinstall the little cups that are meant to prevent minor air leaks and seal out moisture, these can poke a pinhole through the back of that little cup when you press them in to release them again in the future. But it's easy enough to patch up with a dab of silicone and a small bit of plastic wrap.
