1994 850 5-Speed died while warm and in motion

Post by desol8tor »

Hello,

I just experienced my Volvo 850 5-speed die in motion (around 30 mph) with no warning whatsoever.

The scenario: I was coasting to a light and decided to speed up to make the green. In 3rd gear I applied gas, but the engine did not rev. Instead, rpms started to drop (as the engine died), and all dash lights lit, indicating a loss of power to the engine.

I proceeded to turn off the car entirely and restart, but the engine would not fire. It did, however, start after a minute of downtime.

I had a big tune up in July--these parts were replaced...

Air Filter
Ignition Rotor
Distributor Cap
Oil and Oil Filter
Battery

O and I had plenty of gas and oil :D

...any explanation? It seems like a freak thing but I don't really want it happening again.

Thanks

HOLY CRAP theres a huge thread here on stalling volvos...I'm going to work through that thread but if anyone has any other pointers I guess you can reply here

Codes?

Check Engine Light?

If you are not throwing codes I think you should start with the fuel system. A bad fuel pump relay or a fuel pump that is on its way out can cause the exact problems you describe. The fuel pump relay can cause these sort of problems off and on for quite a while, the failures tend to get more and more frequent.

If it is the fuel pump itself it won't last much longer. My experience is that it will only recover a few times before it is just dead.

Hi there,
I've experienced similar problem with my 850 94. Car was stalling once in 2-4 weeks mostly at low speed on intersections and started fine after 10 -15 sec till next stall. It took almost a year to figure out what's going wrong. After four visits dealer looked at me like I'm psicho, couse car worked fine in every angle when they were checking it. They even idle it for 3 hours - no stalling. They sold me couple major cleaning/ maitanence procedures, but problem stayed (routine cleaning I did by myself). Eventually I replaced sparks, wires, distributor, coil, fuel pump, fuel filter with no success. Finally one mechanic drove my car for a day with some gauges installed and found faulty fuel pressure regulator, replaced it and now, three years later, I remember it with shivering.

try the fuel pump relay switch first. easier to get to, and costs less (if that is the problem)

good luck.
I just changed mine!
