S40 oil leak after clutch job (with pic)

Post by kendell »

Hello. I just had a local mechanic replace the clutch on a 2007 S40 at around 100K miles.

Upon driving the car through a heavy rain storm and then parking on my driveway, I noticed oil drips along the driveway and under the car. I jacked the car up and removed the debris panel under the engine and took the attached picture.

The picture is taken at the very front of the car with camera pointed to the rear of the car.

Can someone confirm that this is probably just a bad seal when the mechanic closed up the system at the end of the clutch job?

I'm going to take it back to the mechanic and I just wanted to be armed with as much info as possible.

Thanks very much for the help.

Going to assume there was no leak before the clutch replacement.
So there'd be 3 possibilities. Rear main seal, front transmission seal and slave cylinder. Though I'm not sure if an '07 has integral slave cylinder. Is I it inside or outside of the bell housing?

Did the mechanic replace the rear main seal when he did the clutch?
If yes, I'd say he either installed a bad seal, or didn't install it correctly.

Thanks for the reply. Mechanic said it was the axle that was dripping oil and it found the low spot there in the picture. He said he would take care of it as part of the clutch job {no cost to me}..

That's good.
I once installed a new axle seal on my dad's Civic that was no good out of the box. The seal, not the Honda.
It happens.
