Xc90 engine temp and Monitors

Post by jagerk99 »

I have mystery on my hands. My 2006 XC90 started to display the PO116 engine temp sensor code. I put a new temp sensor in and the temp gauge became erratic. It started normal then hit rock bottom and then after time would creep back up to normal. I still would get the temp sensor code after about 50 miles of driving. So far I have done the battery reset touching the cables. This all started with a routine smog check where the computer could not read the catalyst monitor..any help to get this right would be greatly appreciated. Car runs great otherwise

OEM temp sensor or aftermarket (autozone/pep boys)? You should be able to test Temp Sensor to see if it is bad (ohm meter). Would be my first step.

Could harness behind cluster be loose or have a worn wire(s). Could pull cluster and do a visual check and if moving the wires changes anything you may be a step closer to solving you issue.

I agree - I would test both the old and the new with an ohm-meter, and see if they are producing reasonable readings or not. This could be a failing sensor, but can also be a wiring issue, or a grounding issue, or a CEM/DIM issue. The more you can explicitly test, the better off you are.
