I'm running out of ideas...my 13 S60 T5 AWD (65k mi) stalled yesterday literally 2 blocks from home and I cannot restart it. When it didn't restart, it kinda sounded like the starter didn't engage and even though the starter was clearly running, I though the engine wasn't turning over. When I had help, I realized that was not the case, the engine is turning over. While checking that though I saw that the serpentine belt was ripping, but it's still on and tight, but one of the long grooves has come off. Then I worried that maybe something happened that tore that belt and suspected a timing belt failure. Removed the timing belt cover...all good visually. Looked if I had a spark and I do. Tried to start the car with ether...nothing. Couldn't figure out easiest way to see if gas was still coming or if I had a fuel pump failure (but then again no start with ether...). Couldn't figure out an easy way yet. Tried to remove rear bottom seat. Tried yanking and using a screwdriver, but could not remove yet. Couldn't find any info on this happening to someone else while searching. Btw, no code and all sensors that my OBD2 reader looks at are green. Recharged the battery as it was draining with all the tries. Fully charged...no change. Anybody has any ideas?
I thought yesterday and for sure now I know that the car is misfiring. Also, the check engine light came on after cranking the engine long enough, but the OBD2 reader says it's all good. I know that the reader is good as another car that I have has a check engine light and I can read that code with the reader. When I turned the ignition off, and back on again (ignition on mode) the check engine light went out.
I don't know about this weird sound when starting, but never heard the car not start (it always started right away) so maybe that's normal (and again I see the belt move, so the engine turns over). Anything else that I should check? Anybody see any connection to the serpentine belt or just a coincidence? The serpentine belt was fine 3 weeks ago when I last opened the hood. Thanks for any ideas.

Completely grasping at straws here, but maybe the timing belt jumped a sprocket and is mis-timed now? I also believe the T5 that year is still a zero-clearance engine and a broken timing belt could/will cause bent valves. Also, describe the weird sound. And you said "misfire"; so the engine is definitely firing, just not running on its own?
Even though you are not seeing any codes on your OBDII reader, you probably should get a VIDA reader hooked up. It'll be more thorough, and give you some better insight.

From his description it looks like the starter is turning crankshaft but sounds like there is no compression across all cylinders.
If this is the case, it falls more into a general ICE mechanical failure diagnosis where we don't necessarily need to be expressly familiar with this exact year/model/engine. Most likely candidates would be:
1. timing belt skipped
-or-
2. major head gasket failure
The unusual wear observed on the accessory belt might indicate that something it goes around locked up such as an alternator or AC compressor bearing. This can (note: not always) cause the timing belt to skip on a vast array of different makes/models.
Try to line up the timing marks and see if or how far off it is.

Edit Tow it to the nearest Volvo dealer. It's only a '13. Maybe you'll get lucky with a sympathetic SM that can pull a goodwill out of his hat. Though with 83k it's sort of a long shot. I wouldn't count on it. Short of that, unless you purchased a good extended warranty with the vehicle, if you can afford it, your more attractive option might be to track down a good used engine from a wrecker. Nothing showing on car-part.com Complete used T5 motor for a '13-14-15 seem to go for around $1100-$1300 on ebay (+shipping). Most of them advertised with substantially fewer miles than 83k. You'll have to find someone to drop it in.
For many of us on this site, we drive older cars for which extremely low mileage used engines simply do not exist in the wild so we tend to fix what we have. For a '13 that option opens up.
