Intermittent Fuel Rail Pressure sensor error code P0190

Post by shondyrocks »

Hi,

I am new to the forum and a new owner of a pre-owned 2006 S40. The car has been fine, other than having prematurely failing struts (I'll blame Ford). I recently got the check engine light which registered a P0190 Fuel Pressure Sensor warning. I did my due diligence, but now am concerned that it's not just the sensor. There doesn't appear to be a fuel filter on my particular car based on the VIN, so the least expensive option would be to just replace the sensor and see what happens.

The check engine light comes on for a time, then goes away. I am wondering if this is common, weather or temperature related, etc.

I am just trying to see if anyone else's experience has led them to having to replace the fuel pump or some other components in the fuel system. The car has about 120K miles on it, and the only "replace" items that come up at that mileage are spark plugs and the timing belt, which I plan to do in the spring.

Appreciate any advice - thanks!

The sensor is something that I have read goes bad on these cars. I have seen this posted in other forums fairly often. I would do as you say and just replace it. The good news is that on our cars it isn't very difficult to do at all.

P0109 is not the Fuel Rail pressure it is the Intake Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP)

P0109 = ECM-1400 Intake pressure sensor. Signal too high or too low.

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information ECM-1400

J2000415 Condition
This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the engine control module (ECM) detects a short-circuit to ground or supply voltage or an open-circuit in the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor circuit.
The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) can be diagnosed when the ignition is switched on.

Substitute value
The value from the mass air flow (MAF) sensor is used.

Possible sources

Signal too high
  • Short-circuit to supply voltage in the signal cable
    Open-circuit in the signal cable
Damaged manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor.
    Damaged engine control module (ECM).
Signal too low
  • Short-circuit to ground in the signal cable
Damaged manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor.
    Damaged engine control module (ECM).
Fault symptoms
Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit
Poor accelerator pedal (AP) response.

Exactly that happened to my S40, I changed it out in about 20 minutes, it's easily accessible, the code went away and hasn't come back since.
