What you have for a code reader?

Try disconnecting the Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF) and see if it will start.

Do you still have all those cars in your signature? I'd drop the 96 T5 ECU (from the dead car) into the R, test it out. It's never the ECU, of course, still the ECU appears to be a trivially simple thing to test.

I don't have another 96 turbo running, the sedan ate a waterpump and ruined valves and the R blew a head gasket. (it's been a fun year). I have swapped in another 96T ECU off the shelf I believe worked well enough to wreck the car I grabbed it from and no changes to all tests.
Also probed injectors and got no pulse anywhere. MAF disconnect had no effect.

My harbor freight code reader shows zero codes. A ready test shows everything grey with the circle with a slash through it icon though. On my 96GLT the ready test shows them red or green, so nothing is showing up on the OBDII as ready or not ready, it's like they aren't even there. Something is disconnected somewhere or loose from when the guy who had it last swapped in the motor that's causing this I bet.

Ground to the ECM can cause your no ignition no injection symptoms. Turn the key on and measure the voltage from the battery ground to the +12V and Power ground of the ECM, with a volt meter. I attached a file with the pinout on a previous message.

I was hoping you had an ELM327, bluetooth obd dongle or a USB OBD cable. That way I could point you to a reader that will read the transmission.

I printed the pinout and have not used it yet because there is an A and a B half on the plug and they are symmetrical and not marked so I can't tell which is which, IE which end to count from to come to the correct pin.

I used to have a USB OBD cable and an app on my phone but the cable didn't last and I lost track of it when I got a different phone. I've always wanted a setup that gives more information than what I have. If you point the way I'll go buy stuff because I'll always have another use for it.

The ECU pinouts have A on the left, B on the right, there is polarity it's not totally symmetrical. You can also pull the ECU and look at the little numbers imprinted on the ECU, then map these back to the plug and figure it out that way. It's tricky but all of the info is there. You can use the wire colors in the wiring diagram to figure out which is block A and which is block B on the ECM.

OBD software for a '96 850.

Vol-FCR 1.7.6 expensive, £126.00 with VAT ($175.00) and you supply your own cable.

Vol-FCR 1.3.6, an older version that can be found and downloaded if you look for it.
Vol-FCR 1.3.6 is not as feature rich as 1.7.6 but it will do:

850 OBD-II is a Android app that was written for the Volvo 850/900 series. Supports ELM327(1.4b onwards) or USB ObdLinkSX via OTG support. Not the slickest interface but gets things done.

I started checking today;
A13 marked 'power ground' on the pinout chart is not grounded, key on or off.
B11 'ignition system power stage' is grounded with key off but not with key on. don't have another turbo 96 to compare to at the moment. anyone know if these are normal?


I'm almost positive this is my problem:

A13 and A28 are the same ground electrically and they go to the ground on left front of the engine.
Black wires in a "y" configuration with the bottom of the "y" at the front of the engine.
A42 is a ground also but it is a Brown wire going to the same grounding point on left front of engine.

Check for ground at A28, A42 and the ground on left front of engine. (two wires, one black, one brown)

Thanks Rick. this sounds promising given it had a motor put in and was intermittent for awhile before it failed completely.
