What did you do to your P2 Volvo today?

I replaced the "soft, rubber elbow which connects the hard plastic line which delivers vacuum to the incoming air thermostat to a nipple on the intake manifold" with 4" of 4mm silicone tubing because it crumbled away.

That obviously fixed a vacuum leak. I will report any change in mileage.

Washed it and added some Carpro Hydr02. Very impressed with how effective and shiny it is for so little work. Before the car looked like it had been down a salt mine.. Hopefully it stays cold and dry for a little while longer

Performed surgery on the steering lock assembly.

2003 V70 NA has 235,000 miles. The key was getting hard to turn from OFF to Pos I. Started last summer on hot afternoons but become chronic the last couple months. Problem was inside the lock tumbler - just plain worn out from sliding the key in and out for 15 years. Had I known years ago that this was coming, I would have just left a key in the ignition and carried another plus the fob in my pocket to lock/unlock the doors. Nobody would steel that car.

It took ALL DAY plus one excellent YouTube video showing how to crack into lock assembly. A session of filing down the tumbler “fingers” (I don’t know what they’re really called) componsated for the wear. Back together now, showered, and at the local Mexican restaurant enjoying my favorite lime flavored beverage.

10 minutes with only a 7mm socket needed.

When I check the scrap yard I look for these installed inside the trunk under the bottom cover on the right side, always in good condition. I think all engines had the same part no?

You say your old PEM was "cleaned". I assume the area around the socket was dirty from being mounted exteriorly.
As oragex alluded, I heard they were relocated to the trunk. Mine apparently was.
It was wobbling around loosely by its wire so I used silicone sealer and glued its 4 feet to the side of the spare tire well.
I'll keep my eyes peeled for one next time I'm at a 'yard'.

I actually opened it up and restored it to operation by using Contact cleaner and a small brush on a wire handle.

I don’t think the PEM contaminates from exterior leakage, but from Al oxide flaking off the large heat sink and falling onto the board. The relocation isn’t about stopping stuff getting in but rearranges the mount of the PEM to sideways, which mean flakes now fall harmlessly off the board.
