Can somebody please tell me what year Volvo V70s had transmission issues? I am currently looking to purchase a post 2000 V70, but I am concerned about several years having transmission issues. I was told that those years are 2001 2002 and 2003. Can anyone please help me out with this or direct me about which cars to stay away from?
Thanks
Feld

2007 hits the sweet spot, I'd look for an 06 or 07 in your shoes.

Feld - there really aren't years to stay away from at this point.
If I found a nice 2001, had a PPI done and drove it through its paces and it shifted well, I would buy it. Its much more about how it is cared for at this point.
The problem with the Manual approach is Dirk buys them all before we can.

I just bought an '08 S60 with auto, but someone is selling for parts an '01 with manual for $800 about 3 hours away. The seller states that keys are misplaced, but title is clean otherwise, which raises another red flag of its own. I would be tempted if I had the confidence that '08 engine could be successfully mated with '01 transmission. In the BMW circles the topic of manual swap is quite common and well documented by now. I am more wary of Volvo compatibility of computer equipment associated with engine and tranny.

From what I understand the earlier transmissions develop solenoid issues which can either be replaced with newer models or rebuilt. The years you mention are consistent with what I read. Another issue with the early transmissions is the B4 servo.
That said, I would not shy away from an early model if the price is right. Fixing the solenoids, rebuilding the valve body and/or replacing the B4 is a fairly easy DIY and can be completed for about $150 (B4 servo, valve body rebuild kit which includes solenoid rebuild parts, and tranny fluid).
Plenty of articles on what is necessary.

There are lots of good year/model options, especially if you are willing to fix a broken transmission, but 06 and especially 07 has a lot of things down right out of the box. And I agree the manual transmission is trouble free, just pay attention to the clutch service interval.
As for how to fix a faulty/broken auto trans that is a worthy discussion I suppose, perhaps I misunderstood and OP is quite willing to drop the auto trans and do that.

+1 You will find a 2001 that shifts very well (means perhaps the valve body was already replaced), or a 2005 that shifts on the harsh side. The best is to ask the seller to bring the car at a meeting point, so you can test the transmission fully warmed up.
Also it was not only the transmissions the parts to be aware: around 2004 the CEM was affected by water leaking causing troubles.
