Hi guys, i have a problem with my 2001 v70 xc I have lost all gears except 3rd? and reverse, its intermittant you can be driving down the road and it comes right by itself, when it happens the shift selector lights go out as do the drive park indicator on the dash and you get a cel on the dash which it has been doing for months again intermittant, usually a battery disconnect clears it overnight , i noticed that its worse when headlights used, have tested alternator charge, and replaced battery its no better, a few days ago the battery disconnect did not fix it so i removed the 3 earth points next to the tcm box and cleaned the chassis points spade lugs etc and next morning reconnected and it all came back slowly fist i got D displayed and slowly the other functions returned as the TCM woke up , until it drove for an hour and parked it when i came back to come home it failed again .If i run the car diagnosics it says tcm not checked but all other tests ok. I read about the cooling air to the tcm and so cleaned out the cabin filter that was clogged,i suspect previous owner did nothing but drive it i suspect a voltage not being supplied to the tcm but all fuses check ok, i cant find a specific fuse for the tcm. the car displays like a small curved ramp on the display and thats all. It drives fine but does not shift gears at all, i am about to try and remove the TCM to clean its contacts can you suggest any other tests i can do i am at least 140km from a volvo dealer, and sadly unemployed at present so taking it to a dealer is not an option, and i dont have any code reader. Can anyone suggest where i might find a Circuit of the car im a electronic tech so hoped to trace out the voltage supplies, any help much appreciated

If it is not electric I would look at the B4 Servo and solenoids. What color is your fluid?

This could be any number of things. Short of getting a pro/dealer diagnostic there's 3 or 4 external components you could try. If you were in the states I'd say you could get them all for around $20-$30 at a pick and pull. I don't know if you have anything like that in New Zealand, therefore these parts may still be costly/prohibitive. Especially considering you're in the dark and don't know if any of it is the actual problem:
There is a plug-in relay for the TCM located on the CEM. Other potential culprits might be the input/output shaft speed sensors and possibly the transmission range (aka PRNDL) sensor, all on the top of the trans below the air box. If you're convinced it's a power issue (evidenced by an association of trans symptoms when the headlights are on), trace the power supply to the CEM from the battery. If it's like the later ones the CEM is powered primarily by two red wires that feed through the small fuse box next to the battery. Also check the CEM grounds at the footwell underneath interior door trim on the side where the CEM is. I don't think these power feeds to the CEM are at fault, but since the headlamps may be involved it should be mentioned.

If none of that makes a difference you'll likely need to consult a dealer/trans specialist for a proper diagnosis. At that point it's likely to get expensive.

Thanks for all the advice. I bought a 2004 xc70 turbo all wheel drive with 160K. It shifts really nice bur the tranny fluid was on the dirty side (didn't smell burnt, just a bit dirty). I liked the car and I need a car to get back to work, so I bought it and am keeping my fingers crossed. Plan on replacing the tranny fluid soon.

Hi guys back again, i have been doing what you have suggested but the service manual i have located in the link above is for a 2000 car and mine is different as its a 2001, the under hood fuse box in my car has three rows of fuses side by side and relays on the right, and i cant find a manual that covers that config. I have traced enough from the circuit to find there is no volts going to the TCM via a fuse 11B/2 but i cant find that fuse, it feeds according to the circuit a relay that then feeds on a green white wire that goes back to what i assume is the CEM in the cabin and up to the TCM , i have removed the CEM and it has multiple relays and without completely disassembing it cant determine which relay it is. A youtube video suggested a the pnpr switch but i removed the one from my other v70 and a another from a spare tranmission i have and tested them all in the other v70 and they all test fine, the diagram shows the common of the switch going to ground , i have tested that and it does, the problem seems to be a relay 2/32 on the CEM but i have no idea which it could be and they are not labeled on the CEM, would anyone have a diagram labeling the CEM relays, i have located a junction point 23/245 on the CEM and another gn/white cable heads off into the firewall from the CEM i assume to the 11b/2 fuse but short of disassembling half the car i have not been able to locate its position i suspect either an intermittant connection on the fuse or a intermittant relay.
Also my car is RHD and im looking for the security system module , as i suspect it has a dead battery as the car sometimes does wierd things like the sunroof would not close untill i toggled the child lock on the rear pass door, so it would be good to find this unit and sort its battery , any help much appreciated guys as this is too good a car too just throw in the scrap,
best regards
Graeme

Please don't scrap the car yet :D

See if you can use one of these for troubleshooting:

The battery inside the alarm siren is a known offender; there is a very good write-up on how to repair the siren or replace it with a new one; just search this forum, it's there somewhere
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

I think this is the write-up:

As far as I can recall, the PCB inside mine was FU beyond actionable repair so I was too lazy to fix it and just went for a new siren.
Hope this helps
