Hello all
Here i am with yet another problem. When I forst got my 850 I would open the sunroof and hear this loud clicking noise from teh sunroof when sliding it back. I had no idea what it was and it continued to open so I just turned the radio up and acted liek I didnt hear it.
The other day I tried to slide it back and it moved about a half inch and then stopped. It will return to the closed position and will tilt just fine.
I'm new to these cars but I'm assuming its a busted track. Any ideas? and if so how hard is it to replace.
Thanks
Arlo

Sounds like you have similar problems to what I have... broken pieces in the sunroof track. Either that or you have debris like leaves or dirt that has jammed in the track, but it's likely broken pieces... the tracks are made of plastic and have little pivots inside that break over time. I used this...

... to remove the glass panel and diagnose. After I was able to get the panel out of the way, I found on each of the tracks a couple of pieces of broken plastic hinge-like thingies that were actually blocking the remainder of the mechanism from retracting. Once I cleaned out these pieces and other debris, the sunroof in my case would operate better.
By better, I have to sometimes help it forward so that it doesn't start to pop up before its fully in the opening of the roof itself. Sometimes I have to play with it going forward and backward a bit to make it "seat" into the roof and seal.
The solution is to replace the tracks themselves. I checked the new price from the dealership and they were each $700 (Cdn). Pricey fix. I don't use it a lot, so I just live with it the way it is and guide it closed when I have to. If you want to replace the tracks, you'll be removing the headliner. Hit and miss as to whether you'll find much better at an auto wrecker.
Removing the glass panel to inspect is pretty easy, just follow the instructions above and you'll have it out in 5 minutes, and you can have a better look at things under there.
