1989 245 SW typical clutch lifespan

Post by roberto frances »

I have a 1989 245 wagon, 5 speed, with nearly 184K. I bought the car used with all history/receipts in 1992. Unless I have overlooked something the car has the original clutch. It works just as it should with no problems. Having had other foreign and domestic cars with manual shift that have required clutch replacement with fewer miles I am curious how long a 240 clutch can last. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Have I set some kind of record?

Long time ago I did the clutch on my first wonderful used Volvo ever ('87 340 DL) at around 110 kkm while replacing a leaky RMS, T-Belt, and head gasket. It could have easily made another 150 kkm if not for the oil contamination.

I did not know how the first owner had handled it either...

I have seen another 340 DL with the factory clutch still in good shape at nearly 300 kkm but I would think that's a bit of a stretch.

The lifespan of a clutch strongly depends on the operator's shifting habits and overall behavior, and amount of towing

This is an old post I just spotted; reminded me of my diesel car.
:D
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that
