2000 V70 Stalling / Rough Start After Fueling

Post by brunocerous »

Greetings!

I recently finished getting my newest Volvo fixer-upper to stage zero, finally replacing the fuel filter a couple of days ago, and had hoped it would end the stalling and/or rough start immediately after fueling up.

I'd had a P0445 code, which went away after replacing the fuel tank cap. But every time I put gas in it, the car doesn't want to start. It'll crank ok, then sputter and stall. I've tried letting the fuel pump run a couple of times by turning the key without cranking, but it made no difference. Eventually, I'll manage to give it enough gas to keep the RPMs up, and then it's fine.

I'd hoped it was a dirty fuel filter, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Could it be a bad fuel pump, or something else?

Any ideas would help!

Happen to check the fuel pressure at the injector rail? Could be a marginal (aka dying) pump.

I have had similar problems with all of my P80s if I filled it up beyond the point where the pump clicks off. I think what happens if you try to round it off to an even dollar amount is that the charcoal cannister gets flooded and it winds up sucking raw gas through the purge valve.

Once I figured out not to let it go beyond the pump shutting itself off I haven't had the problem since.

Your going to have to check out your Evap system, it's usually not the gas filler cap. Check all the hoses first, vent hose by filler cap, the purge valve...ect.

I have the same problem and have evap codes, but this only happens when buying discount gas. So I've always attributed these symptoms to buying low quality petrol. Never happens when I fill up at Shell, BP, Exxon, or Marathon (top tier).

That's good to know. I have been fueling up to about 3/4 of a tank at most after springing a leak in my other ('98 V70) fuel filler neck gasket, though this one ('00 V70) doesn't have a leak. Plus, I don't like having the gas-station attendants (it's the only way to fuel up in New Jersey) spill fuel all over the side of the car.

That would be great. Maybe we can buy you a beer or two?

The code hasn't returned in a couple of months, thankfully. Keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way.

I hadn't thought of that. I'll try a different gas station next time. Thanks!

Just try not to mix Shell and Mobil gas, or oil
