This is driving me nuts! My 01 xc70 with 108k has a moderate front end vibration anywhere upwards of 50mph. I bought it like this a few months ago with 104k on it knowing that the front end had some issues. I just replaced the strut bearings, spring mounts, inner tie rod ends, and had the tires ballanced. Outer tie rods had already been replaced and have no play. Also did an alignment. There is no play at all on either front wheel when it's up in the air, tight as a drum. The vibration has decreased a bit but still occurs whether I am accelerating, coasting, or in nuetral as long as my speed is above 50mph. Anybody have a similar problem or any advice?
By the way. I love almost everything about these cars except for all the ridiculous issues that I have been reading about on this site for the past year. Considering the cost of a new Volvo or even a used one, shouldn't the quality of build and reliability be much much better?

If you've balanced and aligned, then I would say a slightly bent rim or possibly a bad hub (wheel bearing). Hope you figure it out.

what about engine mount? i think there are 5, right? maybe one or more are worn... one of mine was broken, another worn, I also had some vibration, so they replaced the two, two months later another two (as predicted) were worn down, so replaced all three remaining. Significant improvement.

It could be a combination of all of the above, but after thinking about it, I would check on what JRL said first....the way it doesn't vibrate until the car speeds up is a telling sign. Also, the hub will make noise differently when turning vs. going straight... The bent rim is easy to check out...just rotate the tires to the back to see if the vibration disappears or not.

if he moves the tires to the back, an all-wheel alignment should be done and balance should be done (<-- ummm was that redundant?).MadeInJapan wrote:... The bent rim is easy to check out...just rotate the tires to the back to see if the vibration disappears or not.

But you can move them temporary just to see if the front vibration clears up.
