Fuel smell around pump? '98 V70

Post by bmdubya1198 »

Well, inspection is due this month and I've put it off until the very end of the month. I need to get rid of my CEL, and I figured I'd try to fix my evap code instead of seeing how long I have after a code reset between most of the monitors being complete and P0442 reappearing.
One thing I can think of being an issue is the fuel pump assembly seal. I never felt quite right about how it seated when I changed the fuel pump last July. If I remove the access panel above the pump, I can smell gas. I know there is what looks like a vent on top of the pump housing, but am I supposed to be able to smell gas when I open that access panel? I figured it may be a sign that the seal isn't doing its job, but I wanted to make sure it's not just coming from the vent (if that's what that is).

If you suspect the seal is bad, I'd change it if you can get a separate replacement somehow. The fuel system should be sealed and no fuel vapors should be escaping. It is possible if your evap hose is broken it could be the cause of the smell, though if it's strong I'd suspect the pump seal. Can you see any signs of leakage at all in there? (Don't use a lighter to see! :D )

I'd definitely check it all out tho. See this other thread yesterday about a dude's car burning down due to a fuel issue! Not good!

Great tip
That thread is what prompted me to ask. I was thinking about this earlier today when I was reading around on the top vent hose, then I came across that thread earlier, which made me want to take care of this just for peace of mind. I'll pop the cover off tomorrow and take a look at it. No leakage that I have seen.

It's also making me rethink the eBay fuel pump I just put in my 740... oh well, that's going to be my "race car" anyway, I'll get an upgraded pump soon.

That's a safe one to go by! I'm going to check this out today if the rain stops finally. It's been a miserably nasty week.

Could be the gasket, or could be the crack in plastic hanger.
