'94 850 Timbing Belt Job- Current Timing appears to be off

Post by esachs »

Hello Volvo Friends,

I've started my first timing belt job on my 94 850 base and before I move further just wanted to check in to see what everybody thought.

When I align the camshaft pulleys with their corresponding notches in the upper timing cover, the crank pulley ends up a little over one cog away from its notch on the oil pump.

heres what that looks like. so when the cams are aligned like this....

the crank pulley is not lined up with its notch, like this

should I keep it as it has been for 80k miles or try and adjust the crank shaft pulley to better align with its notch once the old belt is off?

any thoughts or ideas are appreciated
thanks
-evan

I can’t see your crank mark but the car will run better with the valves in time. I would do it right when you do the timing belt.

Takeout the plugs and the engine will be easy to turn over

It seems that you're one and a half tooth OFF on crank.
I would go back and re-do my work.
Cam locking tool is just a waste of time on these cars...you don't need it at all.

Just release the tensioner, turn the crank back by hand and set it to position, triple check the marks on cams and crank...set up the tensioner...turn the engine by hand for about 3 revolutions,re-check the timing and you're done.

When I did the belt change on a couple of mine (both of the '96s) they were a tooth off when I started. My guess is that about 30% of them on the road are driving around that way. They run better when the timing is correct but they don't run horrible off a tooth like you would think they would.

If you don't get the belt taught across the idler when installing the new belt the timing will shift a tooth when you pull the grenade pin in the tensioner.

BTDT. Indy didn't check it after installation. Performance really suffered climbing hills and passing. Fixing it made a HUGE difference.
