Ignition (coil) problem

Post by SDIgroup »

My 94 960 is getting a +15 signal to the #3 ignition coil (newly replaced Volvo part) and power is traveling through the coil, but I get no spark to the plug. Only this ignition pack is being affected. It appears that the ground return lead might be broken somewhere, but I can't find it. Anyone ever heard of this problem or have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hi, there are numerous unexplainable problems on 960 caused from wiring and electrical contacts. Check the following link, you might find the answer here: http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/960_90Info.htm

Swap coil packs with another cylinder see if the problem follows.

If it does not, it could be a bad front Power Stage. It is located on the front of the 'ball' of the intake manifild. Swap it with the Power stage at the rear of the ball and see if the problem moves to cyl. #6.

it could also be the wires.

Is there a code set, does the Check Engine lite work?

Hi Dan and thanks for the response. The check engine light has never come on. I don't know if this means that the light is burned out or if the condition doesn't merit it (although these days, nearly ANYTHING merits the 'check engine' light). I really don't know. I have swapped packs and it does the same thing. Also bought a new pack (which has been superceded to one with only one mounting bolt) and it does the same thing. I even made a jumper wire from the negative side of the pack (since the other side is definitely receiving 15 volts [like the other packs] so I assume the ECM controls the spark through the negative side) to a spot as far down on the harness as I could (thinking the break might be near the pack) and it made no difference. Unfortunately, I know little about these ignition systems (ask me something about auto air conditioning), so I guess I'll have to bring it to the dealer(?) as I can't seem to find a lot of info on it.
Thanks again

What part, I wonder, does the metal on the bottom of the ignition pack play? Could lack of a good ground at that location cause this problem?

No, the grounding for the power stages is thru a wire. The intake manifold is mostly isolated from the ground by the rubber insulators to the head ports and the bottom of the bulb. The metal on the power stages, I am assuming is to transfer heat away to the sides of the intake manifold. Swap those power stages and see if that changes the coil problem. As the earlier post suggested.
