FYI, here's the (much dirtier) nameplate from the original transmission in my 2001 (early in the 01 model year based on the VIN). It's possible the P/N was changed as they changed the Rev on the valve body casting. I know that this transmission had a no-letter valve body in it. I did not open the 2002 transmission I put into the car, though it was almost certainly a Rev A based on date of manufacture.

I agree: the transmission was probably never serviced. !@&#

My BF's mechanic/friend came over to "help" and basically took over claiming he knew what to do. Two of the three gallons of Valvoline MaxLife ATF were used. Fluid out-go/in-go was not measured. He said the gunk was from disintegrating clutch plates (how he knew that I don't know) and that I needed a "new" transmission. (eye rolling)

I would have preferred using the d&f method described on MVS, exactly, i.e. measuring output/input, but it wasn't. Adding the SeaFoam Trans Tune, which I've had before the new Valvoline MaxLife ATF was purchased, wasn't used either. I would have preferred it was added also . . .

Anyhoo, I read that some folks didn't have great success initially but did after repeating the process. I think it is worth doing another d&f at least one more time and aim to do that this weekend. I understand making sure the fluid level is correct (thank you Ascate and SuperHerman). I feel confident it can be done correctly after reading the instructions and watching the video several times. What I'm unclear about is how to shift through all the gears . . . should I be putting it in Geartronic mode?

I'll hold off on questions/comments re: switching transmissions for now.

This is quite an ordeal for me :-| I really appreciate the clear instructions and hand holding. Thanks for your kind patience.

Yes - with foot on brake - use the Geartronic mode and shift through the gears. If I recall it will not let you do some of the higher forward gears - just keep going up until the gear number doesn't change (if I recall it stops at 3).

The BF mechanic/friend is correct the sludge is the wearing clutch discs (hopefully not disintegrating). It is possible that the clutches are so worn they will no longer grip, but my now long gone 2001 V70 XC rolled over 200k last I heard, on the original clutch discs. I have seen people get over 300k on their transmissions. Every transmission is different and driving styles and terrain will effect how long the transmission will work. If your discs are gone you will have slipping. The reverse function in a car is used the least and its clutch discs should be in the best condition. But, if your solenoids are sticking or the valve body is leaking internally, it will slip because it cannot build enough pressure to fully apply the clutch pack and decrease the life of everything. The hope here is by running the clean fluid through the system, shifting through the gears, it will wash away the debris causing the issues.

Did you hear any whirring noise suggesting a clogged filter?

For now I would just run the car on the driveway and shift through the Geartronic for 10 minutes each day and see if you have any changes. Before you begin pull your oil dipstick and check the fluid color, and repeat this each day before you begin - noting any change in colors. After that a last ditch drain and fill would not hurt.

Brenda...keep going with the drain am doing fills. I might be able to get a mobile mechanic in if you want to try the drill route. That’s seemslike a no brained to try before a transmission swap

Precopster would likely come and do it for the low cost of a free flight from Australia.

Right?

Before d-day back in late March, I heard some whining but only when I started the car in the morning and only for a minute then it would go away. No clunking sounds have ever occurred. If I understand what slippage is [feels sort of like when you hit a patch of ice - like the car's not sure what to do] well, it's never done that except on d-day and then it was combined with high revs . . .

I've been starting the car every 2-3 days. Except for when it was started after the initial d&f, it hasn't whined.

For the next several days, I'll check the dipstick, note changes, and run the car through the gears (per SuperHerman, thank you :-) and check out mobile mechanic possibilities (an excellent idea I hadn't thought of - thank you, Ascate!)

So . . . I followed instructions in SuperHerman's last post. The fluid is bright red and clean. Not only is it clean, it's been overfilled.

I've started the car, let it run, tried putting it through its gears, but won't go forward or back. It doesn't even act like it wants to move (as it did previously). No sounds - no whining or clunking. It simply won't move.

Overfilling isn't good either but thats not encouraging. How are you feeling about the drill?

I can't do the drill . . . The prospect sounds scary. I couldn't do it and don't know anyone that could.
