Do you mean an aftermarket or brand new from volvo? I bought an aftermarket one and indeed it barely lasted a year. I would guess a brand new volvo one you will get many years from it...

I think I actually bought the genuine part then. But we have a lot of rain. And I drive it a lot. So maybe..
Anyway. I just came back from the junkyard and got me a 4 euro s70 passengerside arm.
Didnt count on it only coming off with a socket. On the 850 you screw the nut on the arm. Not in it.
But it works! It just has a bit higher radius. More corner in the leftbottom. But with a different size wiper that would be gone of course.
Not a problem anyway. Best I ever saw on this car!
If this fails and there is no s or v70, I will check the junkyard for european versions of the one on that dodge. Maybe nice for the future.

So...This is what brings me out of 50 months of hibernation
I just bend the cast arms every two years or when needed. Admittedly, I use Rain-X like an addict (old Oregon habit).
@ 4.99 each, I may try this S/V70 arm thing and swap sides so they do not hit. ty.
Question is: What is the year to get them off of at the local JY so I get the newer type?
We have a few 1998-2000 s70's at the jy's.

Smilie for Roobah!
On my 1999 it’s a fine line between not hitting the hood line and hitting the side of the A pillar on wiping.
The Volvo parts lisle website is my favorite place to get and compare good part numbers for stuff

I made the switch to an S70 right-side arm to my drivers side 850. I'm happy with the complete wiping range and don't any longer notice that it hits the hood, a tiny bit. Not a big deal. Sure, it will wear the paint off at that point, but that should never cause a further problem because the occasional scuffing will buff off any surface rust that might begin to form there.

Will the blades refills from my 850 fit the S70 arm? Just purchased a used wiper arm from e-bay as I have bent and grinded my arm way too often.

I had basically no spring travel left while on the glass so it was lifting as it got vertical. I removed the arm then put the aluminum part of the arm in a handy crack in an old, concrete porch then bent the arm a few degrees straighter in two spots. One along the longer part and also a few degrees along the shorter part of that piece. I just went outside and did this after reading through the thread, inspecting the stoppers/springs and retention devices then looking at time involved. I would guess-timate it gave me at least an inch of fresh spring travel before it bottoms out. 10 minute job and if they ever break I will reef on a JY one while also Dremeling off the stoppers a bit. This is fully a see how it goes project. It has worked perfectly for a few years on our sedan's wiper arm.
I do see an issue with the retainer bolts staying tight. I fear I will strip them so I just keep a 13mm handy.

Could running a 20" on that side perhaps prevent the scuffing?rspi wrote: ↑02 Jun 2018, 07:22Yes they are the same size.wilson850r wrote: ↑10 Oct 2013, 11:03 Robert,

regarding wiper arms... I have tried a lot over the years.
- the fix in the first post (grind the stops), it helps, and is needed, but I still had issues
- s70 wipers. No, they do NOT fit, at least for me. I even tried grinding down the spot that rubs, it still rubs on the hood.
- new wipers and new wiper assembly (thought the old one might be damaged). this did help for a few months, but it then got worse than ever. The springs in the arms already were getting weaker again.
So I finally decided to take it to next level level
My latest version requires both 850 and s70 wiper arms for parts.
- remove the springs, and replace with the fat spring of an s/v70 wiper (drill out a hole to connect the spring )
- used a washer to connect the s70 spring to the s70 hook, its not designed for this length.
I have had this version in use for last year, and the shaft (very soft metal, not oem volvo part) broke out of the wiper (too much tension?). I have replaced it with a cut off nail and hope this will last better.
But I can say that these do not lift and actually the motor now has to do some work to drag them over the windscreen. As long as the shaft doesn't brake these are really good.
call me crazy, but I really like to be able to see while driving

So, while they were great for a while (my last post) the aluminium base arms are bending slowly over time. My bad I didn't really believe it I guess. They look sturdy, but the passenger side was actually hitting the hood. Diver side is crazy bent.
I bent them back, but I don't see how I can prevent that... bolt them to a steel bracket? Someone should cast these arms out of steel and sell them.
