Re: What did you do to your Volvo today? (now Sticky!!)
Test that a PCV, they usually don’t kick seals out unless there is crankcase pressure. You don’t want to kick out the RMS

Ive been thinking the same thing Abscate. But PCV was done about 35K ago when I bought it. Had vacuum with the glove test 10k miles ago I’ll check again when I have it back together tonight.
Regardless the cars always showed signs of a little oil pushing out the dipstick when I’m accelerating and my oil cap seals only seal for 3-4K miles. Just seems weird.
Once these necessities are done I’m thinking maybe a catch can with a vent would be a good idea. I’ve been cleaning the engine this week as much as possibile to recheck for leaks after the seal replacements and I am really sick of all this oil everywhere. Besides the leaks my intercooler pipes are nasty and sticky from it.
Starting to think the stock PCV system just can’t cut it on my aging engine.

My cousin’s car blew out the front intake cam seal probably six months to a year after the PCV had been done. It happens, just not too often.

Rings. That's the same stuff my cars does, and it passes the glove test flying colors. Does your car also blow clouds of blue smoke after coasting down a hill on a hot day? If yes, likely your piston rings are toast and you're blowing combustion gases past on hard acceleration.
My first signs were also the dipstick and the oil cap. Soon after, the exhaust cam seal started oozing. It's only a matter of time before I lose a seal more dramatically and that's the end of that motor.

Funny you mention that, his car does puff some blue smoke on acceleration. I always figured it was probably valve stem seals, but bad rings makes sense.j-dawg wrote: ↑03 Jun 2018, 10:03 Rings. My intake cam seals were the worst leakers by far of the group so I’m thinking of running a vented catch can off the oil cap since it’s on that same side of the top of the engine
I’m fine with getting my engine rebuilt but not for a couple years hopefully and I’d rather it be a planned event than after a break down

jtp - totally forgot that steering wheel and box we talked about - do you still want that? If I can find my old oil cap I can throw that in so you have a back up if you butcher yours with a catch can hose...or butcher mine...

What brand of oil cap seal do you use? I pay up for the Volvo ones as I found most aftermarket ones were either too thin or went hard and leaked soon after fitting.
When did you last replace the 'O' ring seals on the dipstick? They also harden with age and leak. If you can't find the part number try those from a P2 they are the same.
Maybe the seal going is just an old seal that has had it's time.
My point is maybe you are over thinking this and it may be just some maintenance issues due to age of the current parts and actually not anything really serious. Again, maybe it is, but try the simple stuff first.
Neil.

Ya I know what you mean as far as overthinking it, wouldnt be the first time.scot850 wrote: ↑04 Jun 2018, 08:27 What brand of oil cap seal do you use? I pay up for the Volvo ones as I found most aftermarket ones were either too thin or went hard and leaked soon after fitting.

For oil cap seals the IPD triton one is what I tried first didnt last more than a month until it leaked. I get the OEM ones now and they go before my 5K oil change intervals. I have not checked the o ring on the dipstick tube.
Neither thing is a huge deal in and of themselves, it just bugs me that I've got a good PCV system, clean PTC, negative pressure in the crank case at idle and I blew a cam seal half an inch out on the freeway the other week. Passing people on the beltway in a 20 year old Volvo station wagon is one of my favorite things to do and I can't be blowing seals every month
My front right axle is going in tomorrow, it's priority at the moment so after that I'll have a chance to dig into the positive pressure thing
