valve cover press and cam timng

Post by fastcashn »

Mechanic no longer on the job. Camshafts are out of engine,I have engine timing tools 999-5454, 999-5453, 999-5452, 999-5451 and don't know how to use them or what step to do first to ensure correct alignment of cams and crank.I know how to do timing belt if that was the only thing that needed to be done. The timing belt guide cover that has cam timing markings is gone as if someone removed it from the cover.I also have Chilton manual which i think some parts are wrong, like number 1 cylinder is closest to distributor according to chilton. Volvo is a different animal all together I know this and with the right help I know without a doubt I won't let my friend down. Looking forward to expand my mechanical knowledge and experience

The Chiltons is pretty terrible. A Haynes 850 manual is a bit better but it also has its issues. They all seem to have the ignition firing order wrong.

Cylinder 1 is on the water pump / timing belt end of the engine but you don't set it to TDC when timing the engine, your set the microscopic marks on the harmonic balancer either at the notch on the oil pump or, more likely in your case, there will be two notches and the notch on the oil pump is centered between them.

The Version 2 picture is from a '99 and the notch on the oil pump cover is different than the '98 and earlier versions.

Be sure that you have the intake and the exhaust cams correctly oriented. Intake on the radiator side and exhaust on the firewall side.

The weird part is the gasket, there isn't one. The cam cover is sealed with an anaerobic sealer and the stuff is expensive fro the Volvo Dealer. Some people have used other brands like Permetex but they have reported problems. You need to be a bit careful with the sealer so that you don't have a bunch of residue inside the top of the engine.

The cover is drawn down by screwing the two tools into the spark plug holes and then using the winged nuts to evenly draw the cam cover down onto the head. Even the Chiltons should have the correct torquing order and torque specs for the cover.

Once you have the cover torqued down and the seals set use the cam alignment tool on the back of the camshafts to set the cam timing. The rear of the cams are notched and the tool fits the notches. The notches are not centered so if the tool fits in the notches and the two pieces are properly joined then you can't get the timing wrong. The pulleys go back on and they should be aimed with the timing mark aimed at the V shaped notches on the rear portion of the plastic timing belt cover.

Under the "Links to Major Forum Topics" tab at the top of the page there are several writeups on changing a timing belt with many more pictures. The gotcha on the timing belt is getting the timing belt threaded taught as it goes from the crankshaft, across the idler pulley, and onto the intake sprocket, It is easy to have too much slack in the belt at that point and it pulls the timing off a tooth after you pull the grenade pin on the tensioner.

I was looking for a picture of the cam adjustment tool in use in my gallery but I don't seem to have one.

999 5451 is the crankshaft alignment tool.
Align the marks on the front of crankshaft.
Turn the crankshaft slightly clockwise.
Remove blind cover plug (near the starter) and install tool 5451.
Turn the crankshaft counter-clockwise until it stops against the drift.

999 5452 Install camshaft alignment
It bolts to the rear of the camshafts and the extensions.
Because the notches are offset, the two cams and the tool can only align one way.
Make sure you get the two cams on their correct side of the head

.

999 5453 is the front camshaft holder. It holds the camshafts to the cam cover. Prevents dropping the camshafts.

999 5454 is the camshaft cover press tools. It is used to evenly press the camshaft cover in place. They screw into the spark plug holes. (I use 5454 as handles for maneuvering the head, better control, saves on fingers, reduces profanity. )

Cylinder number one is farthest from the distributor

thank you both for the write ups. The notches on the timing cover are gone they have been ripped away from cover. I looked at many pic and Ive come up with counting 4 teeth from where the timing belt completely leaves the cam sprocket to where the notch is on the cam. Am doing this job today so I will be back to let you know how it went and if i need more advice, thanks so much Eddy

Use 999 5452 to align and lock the camshafts, from there you can't miss.

The notches on 999 5452 and the rear end of the camshafts are off center, there is only one position in 360° where they line up ... the camshafts will be where they should be.

There are only three mounting holes on a camshaft sprocket, 360°/3 = 120°. Surely you can tell of something is off by 120° with an eyeball.
