Fuel Gauge Inaccurate

Post by teg1968 »

New to volvo and have a 2001 v70. Fuel gauge only reads half. I have never driven the car to empty (or out of gas). Filled tank after buying and it only goes to half full, requiring about 9 - 10 gallons. Having read enough, I understand that it has two tanks really. What I don't know is if the problem is a bad sending unit for one of the two tanks is even if the gauge reads empty if I have access to the other tank--so can I drive it as if I have a 20 gallon tank, or does this mean the fuel pump only works pulling fuel out of one tank and one tank remains full and I should drive it as if I only have access to one of the tanks (10 gallons or so)?

One tank, two level senders. 18.5 gallons tank. The CEM takes a reading from both senders the compares the readings to a lookup table. If one sender is not working the CEM will lookup the wrong level.

Is it possible to tell which tank sender is not working? The driver side tank sender is accessed via access beneath seat, correct? But passenger side requires removing tank?

Hooking the car up to Vida will let you check the values from each by itself. Hopefully it'll be apparent which is giving values out of the normal range or the same regardless of level in the tank.
