We are original owners of a 1999 XC70 AWD wagon. It only has 102,000 miles on it. Always maintained by the book, with oil services every 3,500 miles. Last weekend, without warning, white steam billowed out of the center console while we were going up a hill on the freeway. The engine temp did not read hot. We got no warning light for the coolant, though the coolant reservoir was bone dry when we raised the hood. We pulled onto a turnout and had the car towed to our mechanic. Apparently the engine is now ruined, as is the heater core.
The body is navy blue, and in pristine condition. The interior is taupe leather, also in pristine condition.
Anyone interested in it, for a project? It is in Denver.
We have loved this car and hate to see it just go to a junkyard.

Get a second opinion on the engine. From the time of the steam until shutting down of the engine was how long? If momentarily than the engine might be fine. Last year my heater hose blew accelerating onto the interstate emptying the coolant instantly on a hot day. I pulled the car over quickly, temperature gauge never moved and I had her towed to Volvo where the hoses were replaced and my car is just fine. These engines are well built. June

Thanks, June. The steam filled the cabin of the car, so much that we couldn’t even see the console. We had to restart it, to move off the highway. We filled it with coolant, only to discover the liquid pooled on the floor inside the car.
The engine melted, according to our mechanic. The heater core is ruined, as well. He said he’s never seen it happen as badly as it did. I called another mechanic, who said he’s seen the Volvo 70 series do this. He is going to ask around, if someone wants it. We were ready to replace this car anyway, and don’t want to put more money into it ourselves.
