Hi everyone,
I hear a slight squeak coming from the serpentine belt area at idle and notice that the tensioner bounces back and forth during operation. I am noticing this after swapping out a used tensioner with a new pulley, and a new belt in an attempt to address this belt squeak. I saw a youtube video with the same exact noise on a volvo that had the exact situation with the tensioner bouncing. Does anyone know if there is a dampener in these tensioners or is it just spring loaded. Any help appreciated. Thanks,
here is what I am seeing, but my squeak is more

depends which brand were the new parts. many aftermarket ones will give trouble. either the tensioner spring is bad, or one of the other pulleys on the belt is not smooth, the tensioner should not move like this. a very slight vibration means some rollers have wear, but a large movement like yours must be checked asap.

What exactly should be checked? I have the same symptoms on my 02 S60.oragex wrote: ↑26 May 2017, 08:49 depends which brand were the new parts. many aftermarket ones will give trouble. either the tensioner spring is bad, or one of the other pulleys on the belt is not smooth, the tensioner should not move like this. a very slight vibration means some rollers have wear, but a large movement like yours must be checked asap.

I had a strange noise(low pitch squeak like from a dry bearing) from serpentine belt area,ONLY when ac is ON,which turned out to be a serpentine belt which turned to plastic(oem Volvo)...9 years old...and tensioner was bouncing a bit on idle with that belt.
As soon as i removed it and checked the lines i knew that it was belt....note the it hadn't one single crack on the lines! But they were everything but rubber.
Installed the old one(factory one) which i kept in garage for reserve and the noise and bouncing vanished.
So...i bought a new Continental serpentine belt, installed it and there is no trace from previous noise and tensioner bounce.
I had never seen serpentine belt tensioner failure on these cars....roller-yes...but tensioner... never.
Continental is oem for our cars.
