No I didn’t do that, handnt heard of it. I did blow into the lower port with a heater hose and the oil was heard gurgling with not that much of a puff.

One other thing I noticed after start up when I was doing the glove test was a vacuum type of a sound near the timing belt area. I know it’s wasn’t air sucking past the intake manifold because I double and triple checked torque on all intake bolts and used a new gasket.

Is it possible I am hearing the air rushing through the new breather box and fresh system the way it couldn’t have done with it as old and plugged up as it was, or is my imagination getting the better of me?

I really do hear a mini vacuum like sound from that area of the motor I’m not kidding!

On the timing belt side of the intake manifold there is a vacuum line nipple.
you can see it here in step 9.

Is that hose connected? I can see that making a sucking noise if not connected. I'd be surprised if it air flowing through the breather box.

Note: my 1999 base N/A has that nipple. I'm assuming your 98 does but I know there are differences between the two years.

Wow...they are dirty indeed. Use caution with carb cleaner if it's not rated safe for catalytic cnvtr & oxygen sensors. Best to use FI cleaner.

I'd recommend a couple of tanks of Redline Si-1 + gas, back-to-back, as a start.

That would be a good vacuum leak. It is a common one because the hose bend gets brittle.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

No it’s not that nipple on the passenger side of the manifold I checked and the hose is connected there. I think I might be hearing things. However I am pulling two new codes P0133 and P0422 a day after doing this whole repair so I’m not quite sure where to start with that. The car is running fine, other than the codes.
